"A or a ."

As a physician, and as having the privilege of the societal perception, you are always considered a doctor but it is not the same case with dentists.
I have many dentist friends and they do face this topic at times.
A really nice friend of mine is a dentist, but he is also an intellectually sound person, a person i always look for an advice. While having discussion on some medical topic one day, I casually poked him - on this doctor, dentist question(not personal but from societal angle).”
In reply he said – "Tell me yourself the day you have a ."
That day I took it lightly but his curse was there on me. Few days later it all started with a cold sensation converting into severe pain, I took a pain medicine to relieve it but it didn’t. I had to call him at 10 pm in night telling that I am coming to see him.
I immediately went to his clinic and seeing him, the first sentence that came out – ‘ doc saab jaldi dekho yar, too much pain’ (doctor look at it fast).
He smiled at me and said- “ What did u just say, a doctor or a . ?
And he is right, you realize the importance of a healer only when you get that pain. Whosoever has had that pricky dental root pain will agree.
Your skill of treating a disease defines you as a doctor, but still you fail to apply this concept to others.
Being Dentist just signifies their association with that part of the body, a Dentist is a doctor specialised in Oral Health. But in our country health has a definition and oral health poorer- taken care of only in pain and not with hygiene( as usually is the case in developed countries). The answer to the question will thus be directly proportional to one’s interest in dental hygiene. A Doctor or a Dentist, call what you want, the designation doesn't matter till the time you have regards for their dedication and hard work. Admire the skills, admire the interest.
