Ustrasana, the Camel Pose, is one of the most powerful heart-opening asanas in classical Hatha Yoga.
In the traditional approach, this posture is never rushed. It is taught slowly, with grounding, stability, and deep internal awareness. The emphasis is on preparing the spine, opening the chest, and cultivating a steady breath before going into the full expression of the pose.
Steps:
1. Start in Vajrasana and take a few grounding breaths.
2. Come up on your knees, keeping them hip-width apart.
3. Place your hands on your lower back for support.
4. Inhale and lift your chest, opening the collarbones.
5. Exhale and gently lean back from the upper spine.
6. Reach your hands to your heels or keep them on your sacrum.
7. Push hips slightly forward and lift the sternum higher.
8. Hold the pose and breathe steadily.
9. Bring the chin to the chest and slowly rise back up.
Traditionally, Ustrasana is not just a physical posture, it is a practice of vulnerability and trust. As the chest opens, the Anahata Chakra (heart centre) becomes active, allowing emotional release, improved pranic flow, and a sense of inner spaciousness. This asana strengthens the spine, stretches the entire front body, and teaches the practitioner to balance strength with surrender.
We teach Ustrasana the classical way: with patience, discipline, and the understanding that every asana is a journey inward.
