World Down Syndrome Day 2023: 21st March. This day is about Down syndrome and support those who are living with this condition. The date March 21 was selected by the United Nations as it signifies the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome that causes Down syndrome.
The theme for World Down Syndrome Day this year is ‘With Us, Not For Us’. The intention is to convey that people with disabilities also have the right to be treated fairly and have the same opportunities as everyone else.

Hello friends. Today I want to discuss a case of one of my patient. She is a 25 years old lady having a 3 year male child with thalassemia major. The child is on regular blood transfusions and is on iron chelation therapy. Patient herself is a laborer and is finding it very difficult to manage the child. She cannot afford the cost of regular blood tranfusions and iron chelation and is feeling sad for her child. This sad story is true for everyone who is having a child born with thalassemia major. It can be easily prevented by simple blood test. If couple is found to be positive, prenatal diagnosis by amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling can be offered in pregnancy to prevent this disease to occur in the unborn baby. Let's take a pledge to get routine thalassemia screening done in pregnancy
