Q1) What is vitiligo?
Ans : Vitiligo is a skin condition in which pigment producing cells of skin called as melanocytes are destroyed. Vitiligo present as asymptomatic white or off white patches on skin.

Q2) How can one get vitiligo?
Ans : The exact cause of vitiligo is not known. Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease with underlying genetic predisposition.

Q3) Is vitiligo hereditary?
Ans : The inheritance pattern of vitiligo is complex since it is caused by multiple factors. 20-30% of vitiligo patient have atleast one close relative affected by the disease.

Q4) Is it contagious?
Ans : Vitiligo doesn't spread by touch or contact.

Q5) Are all white patches on skin Vitiligo?
Ans : All white patches on skin are not vitiligo. A dermatologist can help in differentiating between various types of white patches.

Q6) Can vitiligo be cured and what are the chances of recurrence?
Ans : Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease hence as with other autoimmune diseases it can not be fully cured.
Treatment can slow it's progression and prevent further spread of disease and it may reoccur after stopping the treatment.
It can be treated effectively if a person consults a dermatologist at very early stage. Proper treatment with regular follow up increase the chance of complete pigmentation.

Q7) Can a person with Vitiligo marry and indulge in sporting activities such as swimming, wrestling?
Ans : Yes a person with Vitiligo can marry. Vitiligo is not contagious and therefore an individual affected with this condition does not need to abstain from any activity involving physical contact.

In case of school going child, the teachers, support staff of school and parents of other children need to be sensitized about the innocuous nature of the disease and special care should be taken by the school to prevent psychological harrasment of the child by his/ her peers.

Q1) what is dermatophyte infection?
Ans: Dermatophyte infection is superficial fungal infection of skin, hair and nails. It is also known as ringworm or daad in Hindi.

Q2) How can one get dermatophyte ( fungal) infection?
Ans: Fungus lives off human keratin thus infection occurs on skin, hair and nail

Q3) How does the infection spread?
Ans:It is transmitted by direct skin contact and by sharing objects of daily use( fomites)

Q4) What are the predisposing factors for development of dermatophyte infection?
Ans : High temperature, increase humidity, poor hygiene, increase sweating predisposes to fungal infection
Self medication or use of topical steroids, steroid antifungal combination, infection in family members are contributory factors.

Q5) What are the causes of reoccurrence?
Ans: Inadequate treatment, improper or inadequate treatment of family members, resistance to antifungal drugs, use of topical steroid or steroid antifungal combination medicine.

DO's
1) Take bath after activities which result in excessive sweating
2) Pat yourself dry carefully after bath
3) Dry your clothings in sun and iron them before using
4) Change socks regularly
5) Avoid wearing tight garments
6) Cotton loose clothing is preferred.

DONT's
1) Don't buy OTC creams
2) Don't use steroid cream
3) Don't share towel, clothing with others
4) Avoid using public places

It's important that all contacts including family members and people in workplace are treated correctly and completely for fungal infection. If your contacts are left untreated you may contact the infection again.
