1 in 4 of us will have a stroke in our lifetime, but almost all strokes can be prevented. If you want to avoid a stroke the first step is to understand our individual risk factors.
Stroke is a feared medical problem because it can be debilitating or even deadly. Your best defense is to make sure you know how to prevent a stroke and how to recognise one so you can get treatment right away.The “mini-strokes” can be just as serious as ischemic strokes.
Some risk factors for stroke can’t be controlled. But you may have some control over other risk factors, including your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and many lifestyle choices.
Stroke is an emergency
Symptoms of a stroke typically appear suddenly and include:
1. Speech difficulty
2. Face drooping or numbness
3. Weakness/paralysis on one side of the body
4. Difficulty seeing or walking

1. Lower blood pressure
2. Lose weight
3. Exercise more
4. If you drink — do it in moderation
5. Treat atrial fibrillation
6. Treat diabetes
7. Quit smoking
