Mamaaee is what i called her. She was my neighbour, 40-50 years older than me and she would look after me when my mom left for her work.

Never have i known a presence so warm, nurturing and soft. My first 10 years were endless times spent with her. From religion to rituals, she’s the one who formed my thoughts and identity.

One such ritual was buying 100 grams of small rectangular cookies from a person like this. The sweet allure of the neatly placed cookies were a visual delight. Rows & layers arranged based on size, shape, colour & price. A master stoke in visual merchandise & salesmanship.

i haven’t eaten these since i was 10 (because thats when she passed away) but there hasn’t been a single time when i have seen a biscuitwala and not reminisced of lost love & sweetness.

It’s the kind of grief that continues to sweeten my life. i hope that this biscuitwala continues to bring small but long lasting happiness in many lives because small businesses losing patronage is the real bitterness of our modern lives.
