Getting breathless isn’t always about age.
Shortness of breath while walking or climbing stairs can be an early sign of lung disease like ILD, pulmonary fibrosis, or COPD.

Early diagnosis can slow progression and change outcomes. Don’t ignore breathlessness - get evaluated in time.

Some people count down the years, but for those with advanced lung disease, life is measured in breaths.

As 2025 comes to a close, we reflect on the incredible journeys of our lung transplant recipients. It is more than just a surgery; it is the transition from a "battle for breath" to the joy of "restored living."

None of this would be possible without the profound courage of donor families who chose hope in their hardest moments. We are honored to be part of every second chance.

Here’s to every deep breath in the New Year.

Lung transplant awareness is rising - not because lung disease is rare, but because people are getting diagnosed earlier than ever.
And with early diagnosis comes clarity, options and hope.

But many still carry outdated beliefs:
❌ “Transplants are the last resort.”
❌ “Outcomes are unpredictable.”
❌ “Very few people qualify.”

The truth?
Lung transplants today are safer, more successful and far more accessible than they were a decade ago.
Early evaluation = better outcomes.

Not every lung condition can be diagnosed with X-rays or routine tests. Sometimes, your doctor suggests advanced procedures like Bronchoscopy, Cryobiopsy or EBUS to clearly identify what’s happening inside your lungs.
These tests help detect infections, fibrosis, cancer, and even decide who might need a lung transplant in the future.

Understand when these tests are truly needed - https://drvimi.in/when-to-consider-bronchoscopy-cryobiopsy-ebus/

✨Growing Through Excellence at The Alfred, Melbourne (The Alfred) ✨
I’m grateful for the ongoing opportunity to train at The Alfred Heart & Lung Transplant Program, one of the most advanced and respected cardiothoracic centers in Australia.

Each day brings new learning — from observing complex heart and lung transplant pathways to understanding the intricacies of ECMO, donor management, and multidisciplinary transplant decision-making. A major highlight has been witnessing their world-class Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) service, known for:
- Managing some of the most challenging PH cases in the region
- Comprehensive transplant-focused evaluation
- Seamless collaboration between PH specialists, transplant physicians, cardiologists, and intensivists
- Evidence-based escalation strategies and right-heart support pathways

Another inspiring area has been The Alfred’s Pediatric Lung Transplant Care, led under the expertise of Dr. Miranda. Observing the thoughtful, compassionate, and highly specialized approach to pediatric lung disease and transplant preparation has been truly eye-opening.

A heartfelt thanks to Prof. Gregory Snell and Prof. Trevor Williams for this invaluable opportunity and guidance.
