Yes, you heard that right!

Your regular breast self examination doesn’t take more than 3 minutes.

1️⃣ Remove all your clothes above the waist. Lie down. Lying down spreads your breasts evenly over your chest and makes it easier to feel lumps or changes. Check your entire breast by feeling all of the tissue from the collarbone to the bottom of the bra line and from the armpit to the breastbone.

2️⃣ Use your index, middle & ring finger and examine the breasts. Use the right hand for the left breast and vice Verda. Move them in circular & Z shape and look for lumps or hard tissues.

3️⃣ Use three different levels of pressure to feel all of your breast tissue. Light pressure is needed to feel the tissue close to the skin surface. Medium pressure is used to feel a little deeper, and firm pressure is used to feel your tissue close to your breastbone and ribs. Avoid lifting your fingers away from the skin as you feel for lumps, unusual thicknesses, or changes of any kind.

Though there are many causes of cancer, especially Ovarian and Breast cancers, 5-10% of HBOC cases occur due to the passing down of genetic mutations from their parents. Most common are BRCA1 & BRCA2 inheritance. On average, a woman with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation has up to a 7 in 10 chance of getting breast cancer by age 50. If the amount of family members having these mutations too is high, the chances of the younger generation having it is directly proportional. These mutations are also responsible for Ovarian cancers. There are many more such genes like ATM, TP53, CHEK2, PTEN etc,. are just as serious as BRCA mutations. Genetic counseling and testing can definitely help early on diagnosis of HBOC. Other factors could be your race, ethnicity, height, dense breast tissue et cetera. Having early onset menarche and late menopause too can be the factors due to more exposure of the breast to hormones.

As mentioned earlier, try timely diagnosis and intervention can save & improve the quality of your life.
Don't delay your tests!
