A recent Times of India article highlighted a sharp rise in leprosy cases across Maharashtra, reporting 483 new cases in Chandrapur alone during the state-wide screening drive. Despite the state government declaring leprosy eliminated in Maharashtra in 2004, these numbers show that leprosy continues to affect vulnerable communities, reminding us that the fight against this disease is far from over.
Over the last three years, LEPRA Society – Chandrapur has been actively responding to this challenge:
42,000+ people screened, 420+ new leprosy cases diagnosed, 4,000+ outpatients supported with treatment, counselling, and follow-up, 750+ nerve assessments conducted, 120 reactions managed, 37 ulcers treated, MCR footwear was provided to those needing protection and support, Through 900+ awareness and training sessions, we reached schools, villages, and high-risk communities educating people that leprosy is curable and encouraging early reporting without fear or stigma.
LEPRA Society’s work extends beyond Chandrapur, covering 11 states across India, with programs supporting communities affected by leprosy, lymphatic filariasis (LF), HIV, and eye care.
The TOI findings reinforce what we witness on the ground: even decades after the 2004 elimination declaration, leprosy remains a real public health concern. But with sustained fieldwork, early diagnosis, and community participation, we are moving closer to a leprosy-free, stigma-free Chandrapur, .
