Fear of surgery is one of the most significant psychological barrier causing delays in cataract operations. The anxiety can be so severe that it causes "paralysis" in decision-making, leading patients to visit multiple doctors or delay surgery for years. A common, outdated belief is that cataracts must be "mature" (very advanced) before removal. In reality, modern surgery is safer and easier when done earlier. According to Dr. Rupsana Chowdhury, Eye Surgeon of The Himalayan Eye Institute, Siliguri, as cataracts get matured, they become harder, making removal more difficult and increases the risk of complications. Hence, delaying cataract surgery is generally not wise because it leads to worsening vision reducing quality of life and independence.
