CAN YOU GIVE NUTS TO YOUR BABY?
According to latest guidelines, nuts are safe to introduce in babies, as young as 6 months.

Until now, nuts were not allowed for babies up to the age of one year. However, according to latest guidelines, nuts are safe to introduce in babies, as young as 6 months of age. They can be given to babies after they have had exposure to usual first foods like cereals, khichri, fruit and vegetables. The grandmothers proved correct one more time—they always used to give “baadam ghiiss ke”

This is great news because nuts like almonds, cashew-nuts and groundnuts are very rich in proteins, beneficial fatty acids, vitamin E and minerals like iron, potassium and manganese.
They cannot be given as such, because of choking hazard(till age 4 years ideally), but can be ground and made into a fine paste/butter with mixing of some edible oil. This can be added in a small quantity to cereal or khichri.

HOW TO TREAT CONSTIPATION IN AN INFANT
1. Breast feed as much as possible. Avoid giving formula milk. If giving formula milk is imperative then try switching to a different formula from the one that you are already using….. (Hope you are aware than fresh milks/cow’s milk is not recommended till the age of 6 months.

2. Offering boiled plain water, in between feedings can be tried. Adding a little saunf and ajwain while boiling the water is a useful traditional Indian strategy. (Here, it is being used as a medicine, and I know , you are aware that water is not to be given to small babies normally.)

3. Put a small amount of coconut oil on the a**s with an ear bud. It will stimulate and lubricate the area, facilitating a bowel movement.

4. Sometimes putting the baby’s buttocks in a warm water bath can help with passing a stool.

5. If your baby is upset and struggling and it has been few days since she last passed a stool, it might help to place a glycerin suppository into the baby’s a**s. Glycerin suppositories are only meant for occasional use...frequent use can harm.

6. If constipation remains a problem, the pediatrician will prescribe a mild laxative for 3 or 4 weeks (NOT 3 or 4 days)

7. Rarely, infant constipation is caused by an underlying condition like deficiency of thyroid hormone, or a narrow and abnormal intestine. These infants will need specific treatment.

9 CHILDREN’S SYMPTOMS WHICH YOU SHOULD NEVER IGNORE

Symptom Number 1: High fever
A fever 100.4 F or higher in babies younger than 3 months, higher than 101 F in a baby 3 to 6 months , and higher than 103 F in a child 6 months to 2 years. In children older than 2 years, a child’s general condition is more important than the thermometer reading.

Symptom Number 2: Long lasting fever
A fever that does not come down with paracetamol or ibuprofen needs a doctor’s attention. Also, if the fever has gone on beyond 5 days even if it is not high grade, should not be ignored.

Symptom Number 3: Fever with a significant headache
A fever associated with a significant headache or a very stiff neck needs a doctor’s attention.

Symptom number 4: Sudden stomach pain
Stomach pain which is on the right lower part of the abdomen and which increases on slight jumping needs to be examined as it could be appendicitis. If any stomach pain is associated with blood in the stools on burning in the urine, you should see a doctor.

Symptom number 5: Headache in the middle of the night or headache associated with vomiting
Headaches that occur in the middle of the night or very early in the morning require a doctor’s opinion. If there is headache associated with vomiting, then it could a sign of migraine or something more serious.

Symptom Number 6: Decreased urination
Decrease urination can sometimes be sign of dehydration or a urine infection. Do look for other signs like a dry/parched tongue and if present, you will need to consult a doctor. If there is vomiting/diarrhea associated with decreased urination you will need to be cautious.

Symptom Number 7: more than two vomits after falling
Any fall in a child less than six months or a fall associated with more than 2 vomits or loss of consciousness or confusion should be given medical attention.

Symptom Number 8: Blue lips
Blue lips or a child breathing fast like Baba Ramdev’s “Kapaal Bhati” should be taken to a nearby doctor.

Symptom Number 9: Swollen tongue or eyes or face, with excessive itchiness.
This could mean an allergic reaction and could be followed by breathing difficulty.

FEVER IN CHILDREN
Which temperature should be considered as high fever?...this is a frequently question.
I am trying to answer this here.

1. FOR INFANTS LESS THAN 3 MONTHS OF AGE: Any fever more than 100.4 F is considered a significant fever and needs urgent medical attention. Most of the time, it could be an ordinary viral infection but at that age, it is important to make sure that we are not missing a bacterial infection or a urinary tract infection.

2. FOR INFANTS BETWEEN 3 to 6 MONTHS OF AGE: Fever more than 101 F is considered significant and requires medical attention.

3. FOR CHILDREN BETWEEN 6 MONTHS to 2 YEARS: Any fever more than 103 F is significant and needs medical attention.

4. FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 2 YEARS: Fevers are not considered urgent and the number on the thermometer is not very important. However, till the age of five years, some children cannot tolerate fevers and need cold sponging and paracetamol to be started immediately. Symptoms associated with fever may be more important to watch for, in children of this age group, to decide if he/she needs urgent pediatric help. Most fevers in this age group do not need urgent medical attention.
