World AIDS Day, designated on 1 December every year since 1988,[1] is an international day dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and mourning those who have died of the disease. The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a life-threatening condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The HIV virus attacks the immune system of the patient and reduces its resistance to other 'diseases'.[2] Government and health officials, non-governmental organizations, and individuals around the world observe the day, often with education on AIDS prevention and control.

World AIDS Day is one of the eleven official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO), along with World Health Day, World Blood Donor Day, World Immunization Week, World Tuberculosis Day, World No To***co Day, World Malaria Day, World Hepatitis Day, World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, World Patient Safety Day and World Chagas Disease Day.[3]

As of 2017, AIDS has killed between 28.9 million and 41.5 million people worldwide, and an estimated 36.7 million people are living with HIV,[4] making it one of the most important global public health issues in recorded history. Thanks to recent improved access to antiretroviral treatment in many regions of the world, the death rate from AIDS epidemic has decreased since its peak in 2005 (1 million in 2016, compared to 1.9 million in 2005).

Skin disorders vary greatly in symptoms and severity. They can be temporary or permanent, and may be painless or painful. Some have situational causes, while others may be genetic. Some skin conditions are minor, and others can be life-threatening.

While most skin disorders are minor, others can indicate a more serious issue. Contact your doctor if you think you might have one of these common skin problems.

There are many illnesses associated with fever. Roseola, rubella(german measles) infectious mononucleosis, typhoid fever, rheumatic fever and dengue being the more common ones. Lately we have had cases of Zika.

Roseola is a viral illness that most commonly affects young kids between 6 months and 2 years old. It's also known as sixth disease, exanthem subitum, and roseola infantum. It is usually marked by several days of high fever, followed by a distinctive rash just as the fever breaks.

Infectious mononucleosis, or mono, refers to a group of symptoms usually caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). It typically occurs in teenagers, but you can get it at any age. The virus is spread through saliva, which is why some people call it “the kissing disease.”

Typhoid fever is a type of enteric fever, along with paratyphoid fever. The cause is the bacterium Salmonella Typhi, also known as Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi, growing in the intestines and blood. Typhoid is spread by eating or drinking food or water contaminated with the f***s of an infected person.

Rheumatic fever is inflammation of the joints, heart, skin, and nervous system, resulting from a complication of untreated streptococcal infection of the throat. Children may have a combination of joint pain, fever, chest pain or palpitations, jerky uncontrollable movements, a rash, and small bumps under the skin.

Dengue virus is transmitted by female mosquitoes mainly of the species Aedes aegypti and, to a lesser extent, Ae. albopictus. This mosquito also transmits chikungunya, yellow fever and Zika infection. Chikungunya also presents with rashes. (In August last year, there was an outbreak in Biliran Province.) In 2017, there was an outbreak of Zika in the Philippines.

Rubella, also known as German measles or three-day measles, is an infection caused by the rubella virus. This disease is often mild with half of people not realizing that they are infected. A rash may start around two weeks after exposure and last for three days.

Rubeola, also called 10-day measles, red measles, or measles, is a viral illness that results in a viral exanthem. Exanthem is another name for a rash or skin eruption. A high fever is normally the first sign of measles. The fever will last 4 to 7 days. It is associated with runny nose, red eyes, sore throat, tiny white bumps in your mouth (doctors call these Koplik spots),rash which usually starts at the hairline and spreads to the neck, torso, limbs, feet, and hands.

Zika virus disease is caused by a virus transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes, which bite during the day.
Symptoms are generally mild and include fever, rash, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise or headache. Symptoms typically last for 2–7 days. Most people with Zika virus infection do not develop symptoms.

Among these viral illnesses, rubella (german measles) and Zika pose a threat to the developing fetus, if a pregnant woman catches them. Zika can result in brain defects of fetuses; rubella can cause miscarriage or stillbirth, and other severe birth defects.

There is no vaccine for roseola and infectious mononucleosis (fortunately they do not cause much harm). Rheumatic fever can be avoided by early treatment of streptococcal throat infection. Vaccines against Zika are currently undergoing clinical trials.

Typhoid, measles (rubeola), german measles (rubella), dengue have vaccines.

Prevention by vaccination, good personal hygiene, keeping a clean environment and prompt medical attention are ways to manage these illnesses.
