Jammu fringe elements’ hate forced closure of medical college: Ruhullah Mehdi

SRINAGAR, Jan 13 : National Conference MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Monday said the fringe elements in Jammu had fallen to such a level in their hate for minorities that they “forced the closure” of an educational institution.

The remark comes days after the National Medical Commission’s ‘abrupt’ decision to withdraw its letter of permission to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Jammu and Kashmir’s Katra.

“There is a vocal minority (among Hindus) in Jammu who had fallen to such levels that they forced closure of medical college because the majority of candidates who got admission were non-Hindus,” Mehdi told reporters in the Kangan area of Ganderbal district.

The Sangharsh Samiti, a recently formed conglomerate of right-wing organisations backed by the BJP, spearheaded an agitation in Jammu last year, demanding the cancellation of admissions to the medical college and seeking reservation of seats exclusively for students professing faith in Mata Vaishno Devi.

The Samiti emerged soon after admissions for the inaugural MBBS batch of 50 students were completed through the NEET merit list. Of these, 42 students are Muslims-mostly from Kashmir, seven are Hindu students from Jammu and one Sikh candidate.

The firebrand MP from Srinagar said the majority of Jammu people would never support the closure of an educational institution.

Jammu is not Jammu (district) alone. Pir Panjal is Jammu, Chenab is Jammu, Doda-Kishtwar and Poonch-Rajouri is Jammu, Kathua-Udhampur is Jammu… So, you should not presume that the fringe speaks for the entire Jammu region,” he added.

Asked about the demand for a separate state for Jammu, Mehdi said Jammu and Kashmir had a shared identity which goes back decades.

We consider Jammu and Kashmir incomplete without Ladakh, not to talk about Jammu. I am sure the Dogras, Gujjars, Paharis and others do not support this demand,” he added.

On the reservation policy issue, Mehdi said the elected government cannot wash its hands off after sending the report for changes in the policy to the lieutenant governor ( LG).

“There is no clarity from the elected government as to how long it is willing to wait before doing something to get the report implemented.

“Last time, we had planned a sit-in so that there would be answers given to the students. If the LG is not taking a decision, let us go together with the students (to protest) outside the LG Office and force him to take a decision,” he added. (PTI)

PDP Leader S Amjid Rizvi Urges CM Omar Abdullah to Keep Promise on National Law University in Budgam

Srinagar, 13/01/26 : PDP Leader S Amjid Rizvi has urge Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to uphold his party's promise to establish a National Law University in Budgam district.

Rizvi emphasized that any U-turn on this commitment would be a grave mistake, undermining the trust of the people. "The people of Budgam and Kashmir are watching, and reneging on this promise would be the worst decision of the present government," he warned.

Rizvi urged the Chief Minister to keep his word, ensuring the establishment of the university, which would be a significant step towards promoting legal education in the region.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR SENIOR CITIZENS & CAREGIVERS

A tragic incident where a 62-year-old senior citizen passed away due to choking after drinking water reminds us of a serious but often ignored risk in old age.

As we grow older, the muscles of the throat and swallowing weaken, increasing the risk of choking and aspiration pneumonia—even while drinking water.

Two major risks for senior citizens:
1️⃣ Prevent falls
2️⃣ Prevent choking
After the age of 60, one must consciously train oneself:

While drinking water,
Stop all activities
Focus only on drinking
Sip slowly and carefully
Important medical advice for elderly care:
1️⃣ Use a straw if possible and keep the head slightly down while swallowing.
2️⃣ Prefer thick soups over clear soups, as thin liquids flow too fast and can cause choking.
3️⃣ Never drink liquids while chewing food. Finish chewing and swallowing first.
4️⃣ Do not talk or turn your head while eating or drinking.
5️⃣ If food or liquid enters the windpipe, coughing may cause sudden rise in blood pressure, facial redness, and in severe cases, can be fatal.

Remember:
With age, strength and endurance reduce. Even small mistakes while eating or drinking can have serious consequences.

Drink slowly. Drink attentively. Drink cautiously.

Fire Breaks Out in Naloosa Forest Area of Boniyar, Locals Allege Arson

Boniyar, Jan 12 (GNS): A major fire erupted in the upper region of the Naloosa forest area in Boniyar, resulting in the burning of several green trees. A video of the fire circulated widely on social media, causing panic among residents in nearby areas.

Locals talking to GNS, alleged that some miscreants deliberately set the forest on fire for personal gain, claiming such incidents have become a recurring issue. They urged authorities to identify and take strict action against those responsible.

Following the outbreak, a senior police officer told GNS that teams from the police and Forest Department immediately rushed to the site to contain the blaze. “The majority of the fire has been brought under control. However, in some upper areas, the fire is still active. There is no threat to residential localities,” he said.

The officer further that the police, forest officials, and fire service personnel continue to work at the site. “An investigation into the cause of the fire has been initiated,” he added. (GNS)
