Glaucoma is one of the common eye conditions leading to severe visual impairment or even blindness. This is because it is a 'silent thief of sight'.

Glaucoma is essentially high pressure inside the eye, which causes damage to the nerve at the back of the eye (optic nerve).

This leads to irreversible loss of field of vision without any dramatic visual symptoms. Hence it may not be detected early.

Prompt treatment by drops, laser or even surgery for advanced cases may prevent further progression of the disease.

This emphasizes the need for regular eye check up for people over the age of 40 years and especially those who have strong family history of glaucoma in parents, siblings or relatives.

'Posterior Vitreous Detachment'

A 'floater' is a very common complaint, especially in people over the age of 50 years. This may or may not be accompanied by flashing lights.

This is due to the jelly (vitreous in ophthalmic language) being pulled off from the back of the eye (optic nerve edge).
This is commoner as the jelly degenerates as age advances and in short-sighted (myopic) individuals. This requires an urgent retina check to rule out any tears or breaks in the retina.
If there are none, the patient is reassured, with an advice to watch out for more floaters, flashes or shadows in the future and seek immediate retina consultation should he/she experience any of these.

Computer vision syndrome (CVS) is a condition, often temporary, resulting from focusing the eyes on a computer or other display device for extended and uninterrupted periods of time.
This leads to symptoms like eye strain, headache, temporary blurring of vision and dryness of the eyes.

Prevention involves giving a eyes a rest for a minute or two after 25 to 30 minutes of continuous work.
Treatment of any refractive error is an absolute necessity.
Adequate lighting and positioning the computer screen to prevent glare is recommended.
Lubricants may prevent drying up of the tear film.

Regular eye examination may help to prevent or reduce the development of symptoms associated with CVS.

There are a lot of myths surrounding the appropriate time to get operated for cataract. So, when is the best time to get your cataract operated?
A. The best time to get operated is when you start having difficulties in doing your day-to-day activities like identifying peoples' faces, watching television, reading, driving, etc. It is advisable not to wait too long to get operated, in order to reduce the hardening of the cararact. The image is an example of a hard mature cataract. Let not anyone tell you anything else!
