"Sudarshanam" isn't merely a personal venture but a segment of an Ayurvedic treatment paradigm that emerged in the 1980s from a visionary dream, entailing the collaboration of Ayurvedic enthusiasts, scholars, humanitarian workers, and professionals from various disciplines. Comprising eight components, symbolizing different branches of Ayurveda, with the objective of reviving ancient knowledge and practices. Among these, "Nethrachikitsa" is a subset within the "Urdhvanga" division, specializing in eye treatments conducted through traditional Ayurvedic techniques and surgical procedures known as "Shalakya ta**ra."
In 1990, Dr. S.S. Badrinath, a renowned ophthalmic surgeon and recipient of the Padma Bhushan award, was invited by Padmashree Darshan Shankar to address the limitations and drawbacks of modern ophthalmology. This collaboration resulted in a comprehensive project report spanning 26 pages, aimed at integrating Ayurvedic principles into modern eye care.
Dr. B.G. Gokulan, later recognized as a luminary in Ayurveda Ophthalmology, was tasked with undergoing training with modern medical students under the Medical Research Foundation for a year, imparting research methodologies and educational frameworks.
Dr. Badrinath's critical analysis of the shortcomings of modern ophthalmology, combined with the extensive research outcomes, underscored Ayurveda's potential contributions to healthcare. This vision has led to national recognition and acceptance of Ayurvedic principles in modern medical practices, effectively addressing various eye conditions and other health issues.
In recent years, Sudarshanam has played a pivotal role in providing free or subsidized treatments to economically disadvantaged individuals, as well as offering discounted healthcare services to Indian defense personnel, police forces, and their families. Dr. B.G. Gokulan, the driving force behind the Sudarshanam Ayurvedic Clinic & Panchakarma Center in Thymala, Manjadi, Thiruvalla, has received appreciation for his dedication and contributions to this field.
For the past 30 years, Sudarshanam has been at the forefront of transforming Ayurvedic healthcare, providing hope and relief to numerous patients suffering from various eye ailments, aging-related vision impairments, allergies, autoimmune diseases, and degenerative conditions like keratoconus. This endeavor has been further supported by research data, enabling its widespread recognition and celebration on National Ayurveda Day.
Dr. B.G. Gokulan extends his gratitude to all media colleagues for their efforts in raising awareness about Sudarshanam and instilling confidence in Ayurvedic treatments among the general public. He emphasizes the importance of continued advocacy and dissemination of information to reach out to more patients, especially those in need.
