Virgin coconut oil: A hidden jewel in coconut se

CPCRI develops a hot process-based VCO technology to popularise the oil in domestic and export markets
The World Coconut Day is being celebrated on September 2 every year. Most of the times, the stakeholders in coconut sector focus more on coconut and to some extent

Though there is scope for value-addition, it is yet to get momentum among the stakeholders in coconut sector in the country. The value-added products would help farmers get good returns for their crops, and develop entrepreneurs in the coconut sector.

While people are aware of coconut oil — one of the major edible oils preferred in Kerala and coastal parts of Karnataka — virgin coconut oil (VCO), another product from coconut, is yet to gain momentum.

KB Hebbar, Head of Plant Physiology, Biochemistry and Post Harvest Technology at the Kasaragod-based Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI), told BusinessLine that VCO refers to the process of preparation of coconut oil from mature coconut kernel-derived fresh coconut milk by mechanical or biological (microbial fermentation) processes with or without the use of heat. This process is devoid of refining, bleaching or deodorisation (RBD) processes, which, a normal coconut oil undergoes.

Basically, VCO is extracted from the milk and not from the copra.

He said though there are various methods of VCO production, CPCRI has developed a hot process-based VCO technology. This technology utilises a double-jacketed cooker, developed exclusively for this purpose, which ensures uniform and controlled spread of heating to the coconut milk during the process of VCO production. Further, VCO produced following CPCRI’s technology has relatively high content of polyphenols.

Till date, CPCRI has commercialised this technology to 55 entrepreneurs, he said. As of now, it is prepared in small scale when compared to other edible oils. But there is scope to explore its potential.

Health benefits
VCO preserves most of its inherent biochemical properties that accords it with immense nutraceutical and medicinal value, as it is produced in a wet process under controlled temperature conditions.

The sensory attributes of VCO reveals that it has aroma of roasted coconut, aroma of cooked coconut with sweet sensation, nutty and rancid aroma which adds to the increasing demand for it, Hebbar said.

SV Ramesh, Senior Scientist at CPCRI, said VCO has been recognised as a functional food and its demand continues to increase. Scientific studies have reported that VCO significantly reduces the bad cholesterol components, low density lipoprotein (LDL) and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol along with increase in good cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol of serum and tissues, he said.

Of late, clinical trials have been successfully conducted to explore the nutraceutical properties of coconut oil including its cardio-protective, neuroprotective (in the treatment of Alzheimer's’ disease, dementia).

Potential
Anitha Karun, Director of CPCRI, told BusinessLine that VCO has a greater potential in the international market, especially in European countries. VCO and its derivatives (especially monolaurin) have been analysed for effective and safe antiviral agents. It has got anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties also. These factors are leading to the increase in its acceptance in the European market. VCO is now gaining acceptance in India also, she said.

The ODOP (one district one product) scheme of the Government has also given thrust on this particular product. The facilities include the subsidy for production related aspects, provision for common processing centres, packaging, branding and assistance for marketing, she added.

From keeping your skin soft and supple to lowering your blood sugar levels, coconut oil is associated with numerous health claims.

Weight loss is also among the list of benefits linked to coconut oil intake. As such, many people looking to shed excess weight add this tropical oil to their meals, snacks, and beverages, including coffee drinks and smoothies.

However, like most ingredients advertised as a magic bullet for weight loss, coconut oil may not be the easy weight loss solution it’s cracked up to be.

This article reviews whether coconut oil can help you lose weight.

Why is coconut oil considered weight-loss-friendly?
While there’s no doubt that coconut oil is a healthy fat, it’s unclear whether this popular product is as effective for weight loss as many people claim.

Coconut oil vs. MCT oil
The belief that this oil benefits weight loss is mainly based on the claim that it may decrease hunger, as well as the fact that coconut products contain specific fats called medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs).

MCTs are metabolized differently than long-chain triglycerides (LCTs), which are found in foods like olive oil and nut butter. MCTs include capric, caprylic, caproic, and lauric acid — though there is some controversy over including lauric acid in this category.

Unlike LCTs, 95% of MCTs are rapidly and directly absorbed into the bloodstream — specifically the portal vein of the liver — and used for immediate fuel (1Trusted Source).

MCTs are also less likely than LCTs to be stored as fat (2Trusted Source, 3Trusted Source, 4Trusted Source).

Although MCTs naturally comprise around 50% of the fat in coconut oil, they can also be isolated and made into a stand-alone product, meaning coconut oil and MCT oil are not the same things (5Trusted Source).

Coconut oil consists of 47.5% lauric acid and less than 8% capric, caprylic, and caproic acids. While most experts classify lauric acid as an MCT, it behaves like an LCT in terms of absorption and metabolism (6).

Specifically, only 25–30% of lauric acid is absorbed through the portal vein, compared with 95% of other MCTs, so it doesn’t have the same effects on health. This is why its classification as an MCT is controversial (1Trusted Source).

Also, while some studies have found that MCT oil increased feelings of fullness and enhanced weight loss, they used oils high in capric and caprylic acid and low in lauric acid, which is unlike the composition of coconut oil (6).

For these reasons, experts argue that coconut oil should not be promoted as having the same effects as MCT oil, and results from MCT studies related to weight loss can’t be extrapolated to coconut oil (7Trusted Source).

May enhance feelings of fullness
Coconut oil may increase feelings of fullness and enhance appetite regulation.

Research has shown that adding fat-rich foods like coconut oil to meals may increase stomach volume, inducing greater sensations of fullness than low fat meals (8Trusted Source).

Some research has also shown that eating foods rich in saturated fats may induce greater fullness than eating foods rich in monounsaturated fats. However, other studies have concluded that feelings of fullness aren’t influenced by fatty acid saturation levels (9Trusted Source, 10Trusted Source).

Therefore, it’s unclear if choosing coconut oil over other types of fats is any more beneficial for inducing feelings of fullness.

Finally, food companies and the media routinely use MCT oil studies to back claims regarding the fullness-promoting qualities of coconut oil. Yet, as stated above, these two products are not the same (11Trusted Source).

SUMMARY
Coconut oil may promote feelings of fullness, and it contains fats known as MCTs, which are linked to health benefits. However, coconut oil should not be confused with MCT oil, as these oils are different and don’t provide the same benefits.

What does the research say?
Research has shown that eating coconut oil may decrease inflammation, raise levels of heart-protective HDL cholesterol, and promote insulin sensitivity (12Trusted Source, 13Trusted Source, 14Trusted Source).

Still, while many studies link MCT oil to weight loss, research on coconut oil’s effect on weight loss is lacking.

Numerous human studies have found that MCT oil consumption may promote feelings of fullness and that replacing LCTs with MCTs may lead to modest weight loss (15Trusted Source, 16Trusted Source).

But remember, results from MCT oil studies should not be applied to coconut oil (11Trusted Source).

In fact, only a few studies have investigated whether coconut oil can curb appetite or enhance weight loss, and their results aren’t promising.

Effects on fullness
Studies do not support the claim that coconut oil can substantially decrease hunger and increase fullness levels.

For example, one study in 15 women with excess weight found that eating breakfast with 25 ml of coconut oil was less effective at reducing appetite 4 hours after the meal, compared with eating the same amount of olive oil (17Trusted Source).

Another study in 15 children with obesity demonstrated that a meal containing 20 grams of coconut oil didn’t induce greater feelings of fullness than consuming the same amount of corn oil (5Trusted Source).

Additionally, a study in 42 adults found that coconut oil was significantly less filling than an MCT oil composed of high amounts of caprylic and capric acids, but slightly more filling than vegetable oil (7Trusted Source).

Researchers have concluded that results from MCT studies shouldn’t be applied to coconut oil and that there is little evidence to support using it to promote feelings of fullness.

Effects on weight loss
While many people believe that consuming coconut oil is a healthy and effective way to shed excess body fat, there is little evidence supporting this theory.

The few studies that have investigated the potential of this oil to enhance weight loss have not shown promising results.

For example, a 4-week study in 91 adults found no significant differences in body weight between groups that consumed 1.8 ounces (50 grams) of either coconut oil, butter, or olive oil per day (12Trusted Source).

However, some research suggests that coconut oil may decrease belly fat. A 4-week study in 20 adults with obesity observed that taking 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of this oil daily significantly reduced waist circumference in male participants (18Trusted Source).

Similarly, some studies in rodents have shown that coconut oil may help reduce belly fat. However, research in this area is still limited (19Trusted Source).

Another 8-week study in 32 adults showed that taking 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of coconut oil daily did not affect weight loss or weight gain, suggesting that this oil may have a neutral effect on your weight at best (13Trusted Source).

SUMMARY
Although coconut oil is often suggested to boost weight loss and feelings of fullness, current research does not support using it as a weight loss tool.

Coconut oil is a natural moisturizer. Many people with eczema find that it soothes the skin and relieves symptoms such as dryness and itchiness.

The main symptoms of eczema are patches of dry, itchy, and scaly skin that may crack and bleed. A key aim of treatment is to keep the skin hydrated.

Some medications can irritate sensitive skin, prompting many people with eczema to search for effective natural treatments, such as coconut oil.

In this article, we delve into the research that explains how coconut oil can relieve eczema symptoms. We also describe how to use it and the possible risks.

How does coconut oil counter eczema?
Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, a healthful fatty acid that is also in breast milk.

Lauric acid is an ingredient in natural remedies for all kinds of health issues, including eczema.

While coconut oil cannot cure eczema, it can soothe the skin, reduce irritation and itching, and lower the risk of infection.

What does the research say?
Coconut oil can soothe the skin and reduce itching.
Eczema reduces the skin's ability to stay hydrated. Results of a 2014 randomized, double-blind clinical trialTrusted Source indicate that applying virgin coconut oil to the skin for 8 weeks may improve skin hydration in children with eczema.

According to the findings of a 2018 study, coconut oil also has anti-inflammatory properties and helps protect the skin.

Similarly, a 2013 studyTrusted Source suggests that the antioxidants in coconut oil can support the treatment of skin conditions.

Authors of a 2014 scientific review concluded that coconut oil can effectively reduce the presence of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. This is significant because people with eczema can be more vulnerable to skin infections.

Eczema can cause the skin to crack and bleed. Scratching or even touching broken skin can lead to infection.

How to use coconut oil for eczema
Coconut oil is solid at room temperature, but exposure to heat turns it into a liquid. A person can use solid or liquid coconut oil on the skin. If it is solid, rub a small scoop between the fingertips until it softens.

To reduce symptoms of eczema, apply coconut oil to the skin twice a day, or more often if necessary. A person can use it like any other lotion or moisturizer.

A person may benefit from applying the oil more often during flare-ups of symptoms, and continuing to use the oil may prevent eczema symptoms from returning or getting worse.

If the skin feels dry in the mornings, try applying coconut oil before bed.

To treat eczema on the scalp, try using coconut oil instead of conditioner. Apply it directly and gently massage it into the scalp. Leave the oil on for a few minutes, then rinse it off with warm water.

Risks
Always talk to a doctor before using coconut oil or any other natural remedies. The doctor can advise about fitting these remedies into a treatment plan.

Anyone who is allergic to coconuts should refrain from using coconut oil. To test for an allergic reaction, try applying a tiny bit of oil to a small patch of undamaged skin.

It is important to choose a high-quality, organic, extra-virgin or cold-pressed coconut oil to ensure that it was extracted without chemicals, as certain chemicals can irritate the skin.

Is it safe for infants?
Always talk to a doctor before using coconut oil or other natural remedies on infants, toddlers, or older children.

If the child is allergic to coconuts, do not expose them to the oil. Always test for allergies first.

When using coconut oil on an infant's or toddler's skin, be sure to keep it away from their eyes.

Otherwise, a person can use coconut oil like any other moisturizer or lotion. Pay special attention to areas that are particularly prone to flare-ups, including the elbows and knees.

The best time to use coconut oil is after a bath or shower. Some people also like to add a bit of coconut oil to the bath.

Other natural remedies for eczema
Apple cider vinegar may relieve symptoms of eczema, but use it with caution.
The following natural remedies may also help to soothe and eliminate symptoms of eczema:

Apple cider vinegar. The acidity and antimicrobial effects of apple cider vinegar may relieve symptoms of eczema. However, the high concentration of acid can irritate or burn sensitive skin, so use caution.
Omega-3 supplements. Taking omega-3 fish oil supplements can boost the immune system and prevent flare-ups.
Vitamin D. These supplements may help prevent eczema symptoms.
Probiotics. Regularly taking probiotics may also help prevent eczema flare-ups.

Summary
Applying coconut oil is a natural way to keep the skin hydrated. This may be especially beneficial during flare-ups of eczema symptoms. Continuing to use the oil between flare-ups may prevent symptoms from returning or becoming worse.

A person can purchase virgin coconut oil online or find it in some supermarkets and health stores.

Using coconut oil regularly can moisturize the skin, reduce itchiness, and lower the risk of infection. However, as always, speak to a doctor before adding a natural remedy to a course of treatment.

What Is Virgin Coconut Oil & What Are Its Benefits

Virgin coconut oil is known for its nice fragrance, taste, antioxidants, medium chain fatty acids (MCFA), and vitamins, among other things. Coconut oil is certainly not an unfamiliar name, but virgin coconut oil might be. Unlike many may assume, it is not simply another name given to the ordinary coconut oil by some company just to increase sales numbers by claiming that it is the purest available form.

What is Virgin Coconut Oil?
Virgin coconut oil is the oil extracted from coconuts without the application of heat. It is rapidly gaining popularity throughout the world in comparison to ordinary coconut oil and for a good reason. There is, in fact, a substance called virgin coconut oil and it differs from regular coconut oil in significant ways. These differences mainly lie with the source (more specifically, the physical form of the source), the method of extraction, and its subsequent benefits.

Extraction of Virgin Coconut Oil
The main difference between regular and virgin coconut oil lies in the processes of their extraction. While the former is extracted by cold compression or cold milling of Copra (another name for dried Coconut kernels) with a moisture content of around six percent, the latter is extracted from coconut milk obtained from fresh coconuts. Thereafter, using processes such as fermentation, churning (centrifugal separation), refrigeration, and the action of enzymes, the oil is separated from the water or moisture. In some cases, this fresh coconut oil is boiled to obtain the oil by evaporating the water or moisture.

However, in the case of virgin coconut oil, the raw materials and the process of extraction should not allow any involvement of heat. Therefore, in good and reputable firms that manufacture virgin coconut oil, utmost care is taken to ensure that the kernels and the raw material, i.e. the coconut milk, are not subjected to heat or sunlight, throughout the whole process. In some cases, virgin coconut oil is also extracted directly by cold compression of fresh dried coconut meat. This is also called Micro-expelling.

Virgin coconut oil extracted by the cold compression method is considered better than that extracted by the fermentation method since the oil extracted by fermentation has higher moisture content and goes rancid quicker. If you ever need to melt it (during winter), do not put it directly in the heat. Instead, put it in a small cup and place the cup in warm water.

Difference Between Virgin & Regular Coconut Oil
Apart from the extraction process, which is the most important difference between regular and virgin coconut oil, let us explore a bit more about what made these two sisters, born of the same mother, so different from each other, yet in other ways remain so similar.

Appearance

Virgin coconut oil looks slightly different from ordinary coconut oil and this differentiation cannot be made with the naked eye. [1] This difference is mainly due to the presence of certain colloidal and other particles and moisture within it. On the other hand, ordinary oil is refined and is mainly left with the fatty acids in it. Ideally, virgin coconut oil should be as clear as water. However, its color may vary slightly depending upon its processing.

Virtues

Virgin coconut oil has a very good taste and smell since it is derived from fresh coconuts and is subjected to very low heat and sunlight. It is also not refined. This preserves all the natural goodness of this oil, including its high content of vitamin E and minerals, which are otherwise robbed from the ordinary coconut oil during processes like heating, filtration, refining, and bleaching, done to make it colorless and odorless. Furthermore, virgin coconut oil is very effective as a moisturizing agent. Its antioxidant properties are far better than those of normal coconut oil.

Composition

The two varieties do not differ much in composition, except for the fact that some polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals that contribute to the taste, fragrance, and goodness of coconut oil are found more in virgin coconut oil than its ordinary counterpart. Furthermore, it is richer in medium chain fatty acids, good cholesterol, and has almost no trans fatty acids.

Benefits of Virgin Coconut Oil
Since it is not subjected to heat (even if it is, it is subjected to very low heat), sunlight, and is extracted from fresh (non-dried) coconuts with a different process of extraction, virgin coconut oil is certainly richer in benefits than ordinary coconut oil. It is higher in vitamin content, antioxidants (which are nil or negligible in ordinary coconut oil), minerals, medium chain fatty acids, taste, fragrance, and even the amount of protein. The shelf life of virgin coconut oil is very long, much longer than any other edible oil and its own variant, the RBD (Refined Bleached Deodorized) coconut oil. Also, it does not go rancid easily. Due to the presence of high amounts of lauric and capric acid, the prospect of using VCO in aiding the treatment of AIDS is also being explored.

Virgin Coconut Oil Price
As we all know, good things were never, are not, and will never be cheap. Virgin coconut oil is no exception to that rule. It is dearer than regular coconut oil (since the production is more complicated and costlier). The prices may vary depending on the manufacturer, quality, and quantity (retail and bulk). Regardless of those small differences, it almost inevitably costs more than its ordinary counterpart.

The Philippines, Indonesia, Burma, Sri Lanka, India, and other tropical countries are the major producers of virgin coconut oil. The oil is cheaper in these countries as compared to the US, Canada, and Europe. Irrespective of the price, when you are out to buy virgin coconut oil, you must go for the reputed and trusted brands. There are many players in the market who just add artificial flavor to regular coconut oil and sell it as virgin coconut oil.virgin coconutoil

10 Best Coconut Oil Reviews 2018
What is Extra Virgin Coconut Oil?
We often get to hear about extra virgin coconut oil, but what is it? And how is it different from virgin coconut oil?

According to the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community, which has provided APCC Standards for Virgin Coconut Oil, “virgin coconut oil is obtained from the fresh and mature kernel of coconuts by mechanical or natural means with or without the application of heat, which does not lead to an alteration of the oil”. [2] [2] When one refers to coconut oil as being extra virgin, the word ‘extra’ is indeed extra. The APCC does not mention anything about extra virgin coconut oil. Hence, for practical purposes, extra virgin coconut oil, in my opinion, should be considered as virgin coconut oil. Virgin coconut oil is an absolutely safe and healthy oil.
