Dr. Boben Thomas ,Dr. Sajeevan, Dr. Durga Prasan, Dr. Rahul Ravind, Dr. Ashwin Oomen Philip, Dr. Jaishankar, Dr. Dilip Harindran, Dr. Teena Rajan, Dr. Nikhil Haridas, Dr. Gayathri, Dr. Rona, Dr. Lekshmi, Dr. Mintu Mathew, and Dr. Anup T.M., met Prof. Chandrabhas Narayana and the team of scientists at Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) today.

The RGCB team presented their translational research work in cancer. Discussions included potential collaborations in clinical trials, funding avenues, resource sharing, need for clinicians to dedicate time for research , logistic challenges in the availability of fresh tissue samples, and proposals to create decentralized nodal centers for cancer research.

We hope this relationship will strengthen the bridge between clinical practice and research!

"Unsung Heroes "

എനിക്ക് പരിചയമുള്ള ഒരു വ്യക്തി കഴിഞ്ഞദിവസം ഫേസ്ബുക്കിൽ അദ്ദേഹം വായിച്ച ഒരു കുറിപ്പിന്റെ സ്ക്രീൻഷോട്ട് പങ്കുവയ്ക്കുകയുണ്ടായി.

വിവാഹ നിശ്ചയത്തിനുശേഷം താനൊരു ഹോച്കിൻസ് ലിംഫോമ ബാധിതയാണെന്ന് അറിയുന്ന ഒരു കുട്ടിയും അതറിഞ്ഞിട്ടും വിവാഹത്തിൽനിന്ന് പിന്മാറാതെ കൂടെ ചേർന്ന് നിൽക്കുകയും ചെയ്ത ഒരു വ്യക്തിയുടെയും ജീവിതഗന്ധിയായ ഒരു കുറിപ്പാണ് അദ്ദേഹം അയച്ചുതന്നത്. അദ്ദേഹം എനിക്കത് അയച്ചു തരുവാൻ ഒരു കാരണമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.!

വായിച്ച മാത്രയിൽ ഒരു വായനാ അനുഭവം എന്നതിലുപരി എനിക്കത് വളരെ ഹൃദയസ്പർശിയായി തോന്നി. അതിന്റെ കാരണം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മകളും ഒരിക്കൽ ഒരു ഹോച്കിൻസ് ലിംഫോമ ബാധിതയായി എന്റെ അടുത്ത് ചികിത്സ തേടിയിരുന്നു എന്നതാണ്. എന്നാൽ ഈ കഥയിൽ നിന്ന് അവരുടെ ജീവിതത്തിലേക്ക് വരുമ്പോഴുള്ള ഒരു വ്യത്യാസം വിവാഹം നടന്ന് വളരെ ചുരുങ്ങിയ ദിവസങ്ങൾ കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മകളുടെ അസുഖം സ്ഥിരീകരിക്കുന്നത് എന്നതായിരുന്നു.

ആശ്ചര്യമെന്ന് പറയട്ടെ ആ കുട്ടി വിവാഹം കഴിച്ച പയ്യനെ എനിക്ക് നേരത്തെ അറിയാമായിരുന്നു. ഞാൻ തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തുള്ള കാലം മുതൽക്കേ അവന്റെ അമ്മ എന്റെ ചികിത്സയിലായിരുന്നു കഴിഞ്ഞത്. വളരെ നല്ല രീതിയിൽ അമ്മയെ ചികിത്സിക്കുകയും, പരിപാലിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു പോന്നത് അവരുടെ ഇളയ മകനായ ഈ പയ്യനായിരുന്നു. പൊതുവേ ആൺകുട്ടികളിൽ നിന്ന് നമുക്ക് പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കാൻ കഴിയാത്ത വിധം വളരെ ആത്മാർത്ഥമായിരുന്നു അവന്റെ സ്നേഹം.

വിവാഹത്തിന്റെ കാര്യം അയാൾ എന്നോട് പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ വിവാഹം കഴിഞ്ഞ് ചുരുങ്ങിയ നാളുകൾക്കുള്ളിൽ എന്നെ വന്ന് കാണുമ്പോൾ ഇത്തരമൊരു വിഷമ സന്ധി പങ്കുവെക്കാനാകുമെന്ന് ഞാൻ ഒട്ടും പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചിരുന്നില്ല.

പിന്നീട് ചികിത്സ നല്ല രീതിയിൽ മുന്നോട്ടുപോവുകയും ആ കുട്ടി പൂർണമായി രോഗവിമുക്തി കൈവരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഇന്നവൾ വലിയൊരു മൾട്ടിനാഷണൽ കമ്പനിയിൽ വൈസ് പ്രസിഡണ്ടായി ജോലി ചെയ്യുകയാണെന്ന വലിയ സന്തോഷമുണ്ട്.

ഇത് പറയുമ്പോഴാണ് 'Unsung Heroes' എന്ന് നമുക്ക് വിളിക്കാവുന്ന ധീരരും, ത്യാഗ സന്നദ്ധരും, സമർപ്പണ മനോഭാവവുമുള്ള അധികമാരും അറിയാത്ത ഒരുപാട് ചെറുപ്പക്കാർ നമ്മുടെ സമൂഹത്തിലുണ്ട് എന്ന സത്യം ഓർത്തുപോകുന്നത്. ഞാൻ ചികിത്സിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള എത്രയോ കുട്ടികളിൽ തന്നെ ഈയൊരു സ്ഥിതിവിശേഷത്തിലൂടെ കടന്നുപോയവരുണ്ട് . പെട്ടെന്ന് ഓർത്തെടുക്കുമ്പോൾ സൽ‍മ, അഖില.. അങ്ങനെ എത്രയോ പേർ.!

യാദൃശ്ചികമെന്ന് പറയട്ടെ ഈ പറഞ്ഞ കുട്ടികൾക്കൊക്കെ ഹോച്കിൻസ് ലിംഫോമയായിരുന്നു അസുഖം.

ഇവരാരും തന്നെ വിവാഹത്തിനു മുൻപോ വിവാഹത്തിന് പിൻപോ എന്ന വ്യത്യാസം കണക്കിലെടുക്കാതെ രോഗബാധിതരായ ഇണകളെ കയ്യൊഴിയാതെ ചേർത്തുപിടിച്ച്‌ മുന്നോട്ട് പോയവരാണ്. കുമാരനാശാന്റെ 'മാംസ നിബന്ധമല്ല രാഗം' എന്ന പ്രണയ കാവ്യം പോലെ പാർട്ണർക്ക് വേണ്ടി ക്ഷമയോടെ, സഹനത്തോടെ ജീവിത പ്രയാസങ്ങളെ ഒരുമിച്ച് നേരിട്ടവരാണ്.

ഈ ചെറുപ്പക്കാരുടെ സ്ഥാനത്ത് ഞാനായിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ എന്ത് തീരുമാനമാണ് എടുക്കുക എന്ന് പലപ്പോഴും ചിന്തിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ചികിത്സയെക്കുറിച്ച് അറിയുന്ന ഒരു ഡോക്ടർ എന്ന നിലയിൽ എന്റെ തീരുമാനങ്ങളും, ബോധവൽക്കരണവും ഒരുപക്ഷേ വ്യത്യസ്തമായിരിക്കും. പക്ഷേ പച്ചയായ ഒരു മനുഷ്യൻ എന്ന നിലയ്ക്ക് പറയുന്ന ആദർശങ്ങളെക്കാൾ ഉപരി പ്രവർത്തിയിൽ ചെയ്തു കാണിക്കാനുള്ള ത്യാഗസന്നദ്ധത കൊണ്ടു കൂടിയാണ് അവരെ നമ്മൾ Unsung Heroes എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നത്.

വളരെയധികം സന്തോഷം തോന്നുന്ന മറ്റൊരു കാര്യം നാളെ (ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 10) വിവാഹം കഴിക്കാൻ പോകുന്ന തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തുള്ള സ്നേഹയെ കുറിച്ച് പറയുമ്പോഴാണ്. വിവാഹം നിശ്ചയിച്ചതിന് ശേഷമായിരുന്നു ആ കുട്ടിക്കും ഹോച്കിൻസ് ലിംഫോമ ഡയഗ്നോസ് ചെയ്തത്. അതിനുശേഷം വിവാഹം കഴിക്കാൻ പോകുന്ന പയ്യനെ കൂട്ടി എന്റെ അടുത്തേക്ക് അവൾ വരികയുണ്ടായി. അസുഖത്തെ പറ്റി സംസാരിക്കുമ്പോഴും വളരെ പോസിറ്റീവ് ആയിട്ടായിരുന്നു പയ്യന്റെ സമീപനം. ന്യൂജൻ ഭാഷയിൽ പറഞ്ഞാൽ കട്ടക്ക് കൂടെ നിൽക്കുന്ന ഒരു പയ്യൻ. എനിക്ക് വളരെയധികം സന്തോഷം തോന്നി.

ഈയടുത്ത് ഹോച്കിൻസ് ലിംഫോമയ്ക്ക് ചികിത്സ തേടിയ റോബിൻ എന്ന പയ്യനെ കുറിച്ചും ഓർത്തുപോകുന്നു. റോബിന്റെ ചികിത്സ നടക്കുമ്പോൾ നീട്ടി വച്ച വിവാഹം വളരെ അടുത്ത് തന്നെ നടക്കാൻ പോകുന്ന സന്തോഷം കൂടി ഞാൻ ഈ അവസരത്തിൽ പങ്കുവയ്ക്കുന്നു.

യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ ഇവരൊക്കെയല്ലേ നമുക്ക് ചുറ്റുമുള്ള
