On this Geriatric Day, NILA came together at Lions Club International to celebrate the invaluable role of older persons in shaping families, communities, and nations. On this International Day of Non-Violence, I walked past a wall with a fading image
of Mahatma Gandhi, his quiet eyes still holding a truth the world seems to have
forgotten.

He once said: “An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind.”
And yet, as bombs fall in Gaza and the smallest coffins are carried through the
streets, the blindness is not from loss it is from choice. A choice by leaders, by
nations, by us as humanity, to look away when children’s cries are drowned by
political agendas.

Every statistic is a warning bell:
-1 in 4 of the victims of modern conflict are children.
-In Gaza, reports show that a child is killed every 10 minutes.
-Across the globe, wars, hunger, and displacement have already left over 40
million children without safe homes.

Numbers don’t bleed. Children do.
If Gandhi were here, he would remind us that strength is not in conquest but in
compassion, and that a civilization’s greatness lies not in its armies, but in how
it protects its weakest its children.

The alarm is clear: silence today is complicity tomorrow.

So, I leave you with a question one Gandhi would have asked us in his quiet way:
What kind of world are we building if the laughter of children is replaced by the
echoes of war?
