Many thyroid nodules do not have any symptoms. Some thyroid nodules may become big enough to interfere with swallowing or breathing. Some of them may cause changes in voice. Thyroid nodules are usually not painful.

What are thyroid nodules?

Nodules are abnormal growths in the thyroid. A few cells of the thyroid multiply abnormally and form a small lump in the substance of the thyroid. They may even have a cover (called capsule) which makes them separate from rest of the thyroid gland.

Is radioactive iodine therapy safe in young women?

Radioactive iodine (RAI) is used in the treatment of hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancers. The dose of radioactive iodine used for hyperthyroidism is much lower than the dose used for thyroid cancers. Some of the women who receive RAI are in the reproductive age group and are concerned about the effects of radiation on the ovaries, the future fertility, and risk to the fetus.
Studies have shown that the radiation exposure to the ovaries is very low as most of the iodine is concentrated in the thyroid. Some women have changes in the hormone levels and irregular periods for up to 12 months after a RAI treatment for thyroid cancer. NO risk has been found for future fertility or risk to the fetus. However, women who have received RAI are discouraged from planning pregnancy for 6-12 months.
