MAHA SHIVARATRI RETREAT
4-Day Maha Shivaratri Retreat
Dates: Febrauary 10 - 14th, 2018
Contact: mountainsarantours@gmail.com
Maha Shivaratri calls for a night devoted to worship of Lord Shiva. This event happens to be on the 14th night of the new moon in the month of Phagun (using the Jyotish Calendar). According to popular belief, Lord Shiva is said to have performed the ‘Tandava Nritya’ on this night. Many other legends and beliefs have been associated with this day. Maha Shivaratri is a big day for the devotees of Lord Shiva (Arunachala).
Shiva’s Tandava Nritya is a vigorous dance that is the source of the cycle of creation, preservation and dissolution. Tandava depicts his violent nature as the destroyer of the universe. The cosmic dance of Shiva, called 'Anandatandava,' meaning, ‘the Dance of Bliss’ symbolizes the cosmic cycles of creation and destruction, as well as the daily rhythm of birth and death. The dance is a pictorial allegory of the five principle manifestations of eternal energy - creation, destruction, preservation, salvation, and illusion.
Lead by a local, knowledgable tour guide, visit many of the most spiritually powerful and respected temples, ashrams and natural landscapes in Tamil Nadu, South India. It is worshipped by many, and people of all cultures and traditions believe that much benefit can be given by spending some time near this sacred place. You will get the chance to explore much of the holy mountain, including sacred power caves (used for centuries by many Siddhas and Saints for deep meditation practice), the Inner Path that goes through the jungle, hugging close to the mountain. "Instead of viewing this as something in the future, own it now. Enlightenment is not something that occurs in the future, after 50 years of sitting cross–legged and saying “OM.” It is right here, in this instant. The reason you’re not experiencing this state of total peace and timelessness is because it is being resisted. It is being resisted because you are trying to control the moment. If you let go of trying to control your experience of the moment, and if you constantly surrender it like a tone of music, then you live on the crest of this exact always-ness... Let go trying to control what you think is about to occur. Then you live in an infinite space of non-time and non-event. There is an infinite peace beyond description. And you are home."

Processing out Negative Feelings

"With loss, the spiritual process of nonresistance and surrendering is effective (however, it is not a suitable process for those emotional states that calibrate lower than 75, such as depression, guilt, and apathy). A spiritually-oriented person values all of life’s experiences and sees each one as an opportunity to evolve spiritually. The technique of processing out involves very simple steps that all depend on willingness and the capacity to surrender.
Stay with the feeling and stay focused on it unswervingly. Realize that all pain is due to resistance. The suffering of loss stems from the attachment and specialness.
Be willing to become immersed in and surrender to the feelings without avoiding them. Notice that they come in waves and that surrendering to the most intense waves tends to decrease their emotional severity.
Ask God’s help and surrender the personal will to God. (It is helpful to read the Ninety-first Psalm or other favorite spiritual passages.)
Be willing to endure and suffer out the process. If not resisted, it will process itself out and come to an end.
Although the suffering of loss is triggered by a specific event, the painful emotions of attachment have actually arisen from multiple sources over time, and there may be more of it below the surface than was first suspected. Thus, each loss actually represents all loss, for the experience is of loss itself and not just the specific event that brought it up to awareness.
A helpful source of strength during the processing out of painful emotions is to identify with all of humanity and realize that suffering is universal and innate to the phenomenon of being human and the evolution of the ego."

"One can fall into the temptation of feeling sorry for oneself, or angry, or worried. The secret attraction of all these options is that they offer an inner payoff or a secret satisfaction, which is the source of the attraction of the mind’s thoughts.
If these payoffs are refused, it will be discovered that, at all times, behind the thought screen, there is a silent, invisible, thought-free space of joy. This is an option that is always available, but to be experienced, it has to be chosen above all other tempting options. The source of joy is always present, always available, and not dependent on circumstances. There are only two obstacles: (1) the ignorance that it is always available and present, and (2) valuing something other than peace and joy above that peace and joy because of the secret pleasure of the payoff.
The experience of the presence of God is available and within at all times, but awaits choice. That choice is made only by surrendering everything other than peace and love to God. In return, the divinity of the Self reveals Itself as ever present but not experienced because it has been ignored or forgotten, or one has chosen otherwise."
