The spine — also called the vertebral column — is the central support structure of the human body 🦴
It is made up of 33 vertebrae stacked one above another, forming a strong yet flexible column that supports body weight, protects the spinal cord, and allows movement. 🧠
The spine is divided into five regions:
🔹 Cervical spine (7 vertebrae) – supports the head and allows neck movements like flexion, extension, and rotation.
🔹 Thoracic spine (12 vertebrae) – connects with the ribs and helps form the rib cage, protecting vital organs like the heart and lungs. ❤️🫁
🔹 Lumbar spine (5 vertebrae) – the strongest part of the spine, responsible for bearing most of the body’s weight and allowing bending and lifting. 💪
🔹 Sacrum (5 fused vertebrae) – connects the spine to the pelvis and helps transfer body weight to the lower limbs.
🔹 Coccyx (4 fused vertebrae) – commonly called the tailbone, important for ligament and muscle attachment.
Between most vertebrae lie intervertebral discs, which act as shock absorbers and allow smooth movement of the spine. ⚙️
A healthy spine relies on good posture, strong core muscles, and proper movement mechanics. Poor posture, repetitive strain, or lack of movement can lead to stiffness and back pain over time.
Take care of your spine — it literally supports everything you do. 🚶♂️
