Maa Dhumavati Puja Vidhi (Worship Procedure)
Worship of Goddess Dhumavati is considered highly esoteric, requiring strict adherence to specific rules. It is generally performed by advanced Ta***ic practitioners and is associated with the attainment of siddhis (spiritual powers), protection from enemies, and relief from extreme poverty or affliction.
Crucial Note: Dhumavati is the Goddess of inauspiciousness, widowhood, and distress. As mentioned in the text you provided, her invocation should generally not be done inside a residential home (Aahvaan ghar mein na karein). The Sadhana (practice) is usually performed in solitary, desolate places, like cremation grounds (Smashan), deep forests, or temples specifically dedicated to her.
1. Preparation (तैयारी)
Time and Day: Dhumavati worship is typically done at night, especially during the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha), on an Ashtami (eighth day) or Chaturdashi (fourteenth day), or on a Tuesday/Saturday.
Aasan (Seat): The seat used for worship must be black or made of tiger/deer skin.
Direction: The seeker usually faces the North or West direction.
Purity: Unlike most Hindu worship which requires pristine purity, some Dhumavati Sadhanas involve Mala (garlands) or offerings that may be Uchchhishta (leftovers/ritually impure), symbolizing her transcendence of dualities. However, basic physical cleanliness is maintained.
Attire: The worshipper often wears black or blue clothing.
2. The Idol or Yantra (मूर्ति या यंत्र)
Idol/Picture: If an image is used, the Goddess is depicted as an old, ugly, gaunt widow, usually riding a chariot pulled by crows, or sitting on a black stone.
Yantra: The specific Dhumavati Yantra is used for focused worship. It is often drawn or installed on black cloth or stone.
3. Basic Rituals (मूल अनुष्ठान)
A. Sankalpa (Intention/Pledge)
Sankalpa is the formal declaration of intent, time, place, and purpose of the ritual. It is typically recited while holding water, rice grains, and a flower in the right hand. There is no single universal mantra for Sankalpa; it is a customizable declaration.
Procedure:
Hold water, rice, and a flower in your right palm.
Recite the Sankalpa by formally stating the details:
The Sankalpa Declaration (Declaration of Intent):
"Om Vishnu, Vishnu, Vishnu. Today, on the auspicious date [mention Tithi, Day, Month, Year, e.g., Amuk Tithau], at the sacred place [mention location, e.g., Amuk Kshetre], under the divine authority of [mention time/era, e.g., Kaliyuge], I, [mention your name and lineage/gotra], am commencing the worship (Pujanam) or spiritual practice (Sadhana) of the revered Goddess Dhumavati. The purpose of this Sadhana is [clearly state your specific goal, e.g., shatru-naashartham (for destruction of enemies), daridrya-vinashartham (for removal of poverty), or Jnana-praptyartham (for attainment of knowledge)]. I pledge to perform [mention the exact number of Japa rounds, e.g., 10,000 recitations of the mantra] to achieve this specific goal. May the Goddess Dhumavati be pleased with this endeavor, and may the Siddhi (success) be granted."
After the recitation, release the water and offerings onto the ground or in a ritual vessel, thus sealing the pledge.
B. Guru Puja (Worship of the Preceptor)
Worship of the Guru is done using the Guru's specific mantra, or the universal Guru Mantra.
Mantra Used (Universal Guru Mantra):
"Om Gum Gurubhyo Namah" or "Om Param Tatvaaya Naaraayanaya Gurubhyo Namaha"
Procedure:
Mentally or physically worship your Guru (spiritual teacher).
Offer flowers, incense, and water while reciting the Guru Mantra, seeking their permission, blessings, and protection before undertaking the fierce Dhumavati Sadhana.
If the Guru has given a specific Dhumavati mantra, the power of the Sadhana is enhanced.
C. Viniyoga (Application)
Viniyoga formally assigns the various components (Sage, Meter, Deity, Mantra) to the ritual. This is essential for directing the energy of the mantra correctly.
The Dhumavati Viniyoga Mantra:
"Om Asya śrī Dhūmāvatī Mantrasya, Pippalāda Ṛṣiḥ, Nigṛt Chhandaḥ, Dhūmāvatī Devatā, Dhūm Bījaṃ, Svāhā Śaktiḥ, Sakala-kārya-siddhaye Viniyogaḥ."
Meaning:
Om: The primal sound.
Asya śrī Dhūmāvatī Mantrasya: For this sacred mantra of Goddess Dhumavati.
Pippalāda Ṛṣiḥ: The Sage (Rishi) is Pippalada.
Nigṛt Chhandaḥ: The meter (Chhanda) is Nigrit.

The Japa must be done with extreme focus, visualizing the Goddess and the intended result.
6. Concluding Rituals (समापन अनुष्ठान)
Homa/Havan (Fire Sacrifice): For major Siddhis, the Mantra Japa is followed by a Homa, offering oblations of the sacrificial materials (often black sesame seeds and ghee) into the fire pit. The number of oblations is usually 1/10th of the total Japa count.

Marjana (Sprinkling): Ritual sprinkling of water.
Visarjan (Dismissal): Ritualistically bidding farewell to the Goddess and the assembled energy, requesting her to return to her divine abode. The Yantra or idol may be immersed in water or left in the Sadhana place.
