Akshaya Tritiya (also known as Akha Teej) falls on Sunday, April 19, 2026.
We will discuss through various scriptures, what the word "Akshaya" means that which never diminishes. This day is considered an Abujh Muhurat, meaning the entire day is so spiritually potent and astrologically balanced (with both the Sun and Moon in their exalted signs) that no specific calculation is needed to start auspicious work.
Regarding the significance and specific timings for Akshaya Tritiya in 2026, here are the details in the format you requested.
The festival of Akshaya Tritiya will fall on Sunday, April 19, 2026. This day is considered an "Abujh Muhurat," meaning the entire day is spiritually potent and does not require a specific calculation to begin auspicious work. The Tritiya Tithi is scheduled to begin at 10:49 AM on April 19 and will conclude the following morning, April 20, at 07:27 AM.
For those looking for the most auspicious windows for Puja, the primary Muhurat is between 10:49 AM and 12:21 PM on April 19. If you are planning to purchase gold or other high-value items, the favorable period begins at 10:49 AM on Sunday and continues until sunrise on Monday.
Beyond these timings, the day carries immense astrological and spiritual weight. It is the unique time of year when both the Sun and the Moon are in their exalted positionsโthe Sun in Aries and the Moon in Ta**us. This alignment is believed to transmit maximum positive energy to Earth, ensuring that any action taken or investment made today grows infinitely.
In addition to being the day the Treta Yuga began, it is also a powerful time for charity.
According to the scriptures we discussed, donating items like water, grain, or clothing on this day creates "Akshaya" or inexhaustible merit for the donor and their ancestors. For business or personal milestones, the most beneficial Choghadiya timings on April 19 include the morning window from 10:49 AM to 12:20 PM, the afternoon slot from 01:58 PM to 03:35 PM, and the evening period from 06:49 PM to 10:57 PM.
Beyond the "Upayas" we detailed from the 10+ Puranas, here is the core significance of why these timings matter so much:
๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ข๐๐๐ฅ ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐ง๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ: This is the unique day of the year when the Sun is exalted in Aries and the Moon is exalted in Ta**us. This celestial dignity is believed to transmit maximum positive energy to Earth, ensuring that any seed (action) planted today grows into an eternal tree.
While gold is a modern favorite, the spiritual reason behind it is to invite Goddess Lakshmi into the home. Because the Tithi is "Akshaya," it is believed that the wealth entering the house today will never leave.
As mentioned in the Bhavishya Purana, this day marks the beginning of the Treta Yuga. It is seen as a day of cosmic renewal, making it the best time to let go of past burdens and start new ventures.
Since the results of actions are "Akshaya," giving even a small amount of water, grain (Sattu), or clothes today is said to protect the donor and their ancestors for generations.

Narada Purana and Vayu Purana specifically emphasize that Akshaya Tritiya is the day the River Ganga descended to Earth from the heavens. The "Upaya" here is not just a general dip, but specifically "Pitru-Tarpan" using Ganga water and black sesame seeds (Til). It is believed that on this day, the gates of the Pitru-Loka are open to receive these offerings directly.

The River Ganga truly destroys all sins, and similarly, the act of performing "Tarpan" (water oblations) for the ancestors on this day is of immense value. Any auspicious Tarpan performed at this time grants "Akshaya" or inexhaustible spiritual merit to the performer and eternal satisfaction to the departed souls

While the Linga Purana mentions Shiva worship, the specific "Upaya" for Lord Kubera is more detailed in the Asitisarkara and certain Agamic texts. It states that on this day, Kubera performed penance and was granted the "Akshaya Nidhis" (Inexhaustible Treasures). The remedy is to worship a "Vigraha" (Idol) of Kubera along with Goddess Lakshmi using "Dhania" (coriander seeds). In many regional traditions derived from these texts, buying coriander seeds is considered as auspicious as buying gold.
Asitisarkara and various Agamic Shastras detail how Kuberaโs intense penance led to his appointment as the "Dhanpati" (Treasurer of the Devas).

The scriptures explain that the term "Dhania" is linguistically and spiritually linked to "Dhan" (wealth). According to these Agamic traditions, offering coriander seeds to the idols of Lakshmi and Kubera is a ritual of "Bija-Arpan," or sowing the seeds of prosperity.
The ritual suggests that after the puja, one should take a portion of these coriander seeds and sow them in a pot at home. If the seeds sprout healthily, it is seen as a sign of growing prosperity for the coming year. This is why, in many households, buying a small packet of coriander seeds on Akshaya Tritiya is considered just as spiritually significant as purchasing expensive goldโboth represent the "Akshaya" or non-decaying nature of life's resources.

I missed mentioning the Srimad Bhagavatam (10th Canto). This is arguably one of the most important texts for this day. It is the day Sudama (Kuchela) visited Lord Krishna with a handful of "Poha" (beaten rice). The "Upaya" derived from this text is the offering of Poha to Krishna. It signifies that even a humble offering, if given with pure love on this day, results in "Akshaya" (limitless) grace and wealth, just as Sudamaโs hut turned into a palace.

The specific remedy derived from this incident is the offering of Poha mixed with jaggery or sugar to Lord Krishna on Akshaya Tritiya. The Srimad Bhagavatam explains that when Krishna ate just two handfuls of the dry rice, He bestowed all the riches of the three worlds upon His friend.
Following this tradition, the "Upaya" involves preparing a small bowl of sweetened Poha and offering it as Bhoga. This act is meant to dissolve the "Daridrata" (poverty of mind and spirit) and replace it with "Akshaya Bhakti" (undecaying devotion). It reminds us that on this specific tithi, your smallest act of kindness or smallest offering is magnified infinitely by the Divine.

While I mentioned Annapurna under Narada Purana, the Kashi Khanda of the Skanda Purana is the primary authority here. It states that Lord Shiva himself sought alms from Goddess Annapurna on this day to feed the world. The "Upaya" is the "Anna-Daan" (donating cooked food). It is said that anyone who feeds at least one person on this day will never see "Daridrata" (poverty) in their lineage.

The Kashi Khanda provides a specific "Upaya" for this day: the distribution of cooked food or raw grains to the needy. It states that since Goddess Annapurna appeared on this tithi, the merit of feeding even one hungry soul is multiplied infinitely.
The ritual suggests that before the family eats on Akshaya Tritiya, a small portion of the meal should be set aside as an offering to the Goddess and then shared with someone outside the family. This practice is believed to remove "Daridrata" (poverty) from one's lineage for seven generations. In Kashi (Varanasi), this day is celebrated with the "Shiva-Annapurna" procession to remind devotees that the Divine resides in the act of sharing nourishment.

The Ganesh Purana adds a layer to the Mahabharata story. It states that this is the day Lord Ganesha agreed to become the scribe for Ved Vyasa. The "Upaya" for students and seekers of knowledge is to offer "Durva" (grass) and "Modaks" to Ganesha and start a new book or project. This ensures that the knowledge gained becomes "Akshaya" (never forgotten).
According to the Ganesh Purana, Ved Vyasa sought a scribe capable of keeping up with the speed of his divine dictation. Lord Ganesha agreed, but with the condition that Vyasa must not stop reciting. Vyasa, in turn, countered that Ganesha must understand every verse before writing it. This sacred contract began on Akshaya Tritiya, making it the supreme day for Vidya-Arambha (the beginning of education) and the pursuit of wisdom.

On this day, one should offer Durva (sacred grass) and a red flower to Lord Ganesha while placing a new notebook or a professional tool at His feet.
The ritual signifies that any knowledge gained or project started on this day becomes "Akshaya"โit stays with the person throughout their life and leads to successful completion. For those seeking mental clarity, the text recommends starting the study of a new scripture or language on this Muhurat to ensure the blessing of the "Buddhi-Pradayaka" (Giver of Intellect).

The Nilamata Purana and local Himalayan Shastras highlight that the portals (Kapat) of the Badrinath Temple open on this day after the long winter. The "Upaya" is the "Chandan-Yatra"โsmearing the idol of the Lord with sandalwood paste. For those who cannot travel, the remedy is to perform "Chandan-Seva" at home by applying sandalwood paste to a Vishnu idol or a Shaligram to find relief from mental heat and anxiety.

The Nilamata Purana suggests a specific remedy for those who cannot travel to the Himalayas: the performance of Chandan-Abhishekam at home. By applying freshly ground sandalwood paste to the forehead of a Vishnu idol or a Shaligram, the devotee seeks relief from the "Tapa" (the three types of suffering: physical, mental, and spiritual).
This "Upaya" is believed to stabilize the mind and provide a cooling effect on one's destiny. The text emphasizes that just as the fragrance of sandalwood lingers, the merit of this service remains "Akshaya" (undecaying), bringing tranquility to the household for the entire year. It is also a day to distribute cooling drinks or water to travelers, mimicking the refreshing nature of the Lord's own transition.

The Saura Purana emphasizes the "Upaya" of "Suryopasana." Since the Sun is at its peak (exalted in Aries), reciting the Aditya Hridaya Stotra or performing 12 Surya Namaskars at sunrise on this day is said to cure chronic physical ailments and provide "Tejas" (radiance) to the soul.

The specific remedy mentioned in the Saura Purana involves waking up during the "Brahmamuhurta" (before sunrise) and performing the Surya Namaskar or reciting the Aditya Hridaya Stotra. The "Upaya" is to offer water from a copper vessel to the rising Sun, mixed with red flowers and sandalwood.
The text claims that because the Sun is "Akshaya" (imperishable) and in its highest dignity today, this offering empowers the "Prana" (life force) of the devotee. It is believed that this ritual clears the "Chakras" and provides a shield of "Tejas" (radiance) that lasts throughout the year. For those seeking professional growth, the Saura Purana suggests that looking at the Sun (with closed or protected eyes) and meditating on its golden light on this day ensures that one's fame and influence never diminish.

The Devi Bhagavata Purana suggests a beautiful and practical remedy: inviting young girls to one's home, washing their feet with respect, and offering them "Shringar" items (such as red clothes, bangles, or ribbons) along with sweets and fruits.
The text explains that by honoring these young "Kanyas," the devotee is directly honoring the Mula-Prakriti (Root Nature). This "Upaya" is believed to bring harmony to the household and ensure that the "Sowbhagya" (good fortune) of the family remains "Akshaya." For women specifically, the text recommends offering "Suhaag" items (vermilion, turmeric, and flowers) to a temple of the Goddess to ensure the long life and prosperity of their family.
While more philosophical, it mentions the "Upaya" of "Mauna" (Silence) and "Dhyana" (Meditation) on the "Eternal Self" (Atman). It suggests that since the outer world is celebrating the "Undecaying," one should realize the "Undecaying" within through self-inquiry on this specific Muhurat.
The Garuda Purana is the primary authority on the journey of the soul after death. It identifies Akshaya Tritiya as a "Moksha-Day." The text explains that because the gates of the higher realms are open, any merit earned today can be "transferred" to deceased ancestors who may be stuck in lower dimensions or the "Preta-Loka" (the realm of ghosts).

The specific remedy mentioned in the Garuda Purana is the donation of a "Shajja" (a set consisting of a bed, pillow, and blanket) or an umbrella and footwear to a needy person or a temple. This is done to ensure the comfort of the ancestors on their spiritual journey. The text claims that by providing "Aashraya" (shelter or comfort) to others on this day, the donor ensures that their own lineage is never without a home or protection.

Finally, the Yoga Vashistha, a philosophical dialogue between Sage Vashistha and Lord Rama, takes a non-ritualistic approach. It defines "Akshaya" not as gold or grain, but as the Atman (the Self), which can never be destroyed by time or space.

This Self (Atman) is truly undecaying, eternal, all-pervading, and auspicious. Therefore, setting aside all transient things, one should contemplate and realize one's own True Self.

The Yoga Vashistha suggests that the ultimate "Upaya" on Akshaya Tritiya is to spend time in Mauna (holy silence) and Dhyana (meditation). The remedy is to sit quietly for at least 24 minutes (one Ghati) and realize that while the body and wealth may change, the "Observer" within is "Akshaya." This internal realization is said to be the highest form of wealth, far exceeding the value of any physical gold.

Based on the Saura Purana and Skanda Purana, your day should begin with Suryopasana. Stand facing the rising sun and offer water from a copper vessel mixed with red flowers and sandalwood. This "Arghya" is believed to grant "Arogya" or everlasting health. Following this, if you are not near the Ganga, add a few drops of Ganga water to your bathing water as per the Narada Purana. This act, performed with the intention of "Pitru-Tarpan," satisfies your ancestors and clears ancestral debts.

This is the primary "Puja Muhurat" where the planetary energies are most aligned. According to the Asitisarkara and Lakshmi Ta**ra, you should worship Lord Kubera and Goddess Lakshmi. Place an idol or a photo of them and offer Dhania (coriander seeds). As we discussed, this ritual of "Bija-Arpan" ensures that your wealth remains "Akshaya." If you are a student or a professional, follow the Ganesh Purana by placing your pen, books, or tools at the feet of Lord Ganesha and offering Durva grass to ensure that your skills and knowledge never diminish.
As the sun reaches its peak, the "Upayas" focus on the heat of the season and the hunger of the world. Following the Kashi Khanda of the Skanda Purana, perform Anna-Daan by feeding at least one person or donating raw grains. As per the Srimad Bhagavatam, offer a bowl of Poha (beaten rice) with jaggery to Lord Krishna, symbolizing that even the smallest gift given with love is returned infinitely. For those looking to provide comfort to their ancestors, the Garuda Purana suggests donating cooling items like umbrellas, water pots (Udaka-Kumbha), or footwear to travelers or the needy.

In the evening, follow the Devi Bhagavata Purana by performing Kanya Pujan. Honor young girls in your neighborhood with sweets and "Shringar" items to invite the eternal energy of the Mother Goddess into your home. This is also the time for Chandan-Seva, as mentioned in the Nilamata Purana; apply sandalwood paste to a Vishnu idol or a Shaligram to bring mental peace and stability to your family.

Finally, as the day ends, align with the Yoga Vashistha. Spend at least 24 minutes in Mauna (silence) or Dhyana (meditation). Reflect on the fact that while the items you bought or donated today are auspicious, the "Observer" within youโyour Atmanโis the only thing that is truly "Akshaya" or undecaying. This realization is the ultimate wealth that no one can take away.

This is the most critical step to direct the energy of the Pooja toward your goal. Take some water, a few grains of rice, and a flower in your right palm. Focus on your wish and say: "I [Your Name], of [Your Gotra], on this day of Akshay Tritiya 2026, perform this Pooja of Dakshinawarti Shankh for the permanent stay of Goddess Lakshmi in my home and for the removal of all debts and obstacles." Action: Let the water flow onto the ground.
Place the Shankh in the copper/silver plate. Its open "belly" should face upwards, and the tail should face you.
Pour Gangajal over it.
Pour a mixture of milk, curd, honey, and sugar.
Finally, wash it again with clean water or Gangajal.
Spread the red silk cloth on a wooden platform. Make a small heap of rice (Akshat) in the center. Place the Shankh on this rice heap. The pointed end should point towards your Pooja room's deity or the East.
Apply a dot of Sandalwood paste, Kumkum, and Turmeric on the Shankh. Place a silver coin and a few grains of rice inside the hollow of the Shankh. Offer the red flowers.
Light the Ghee lamp and incense. Recite the following Mantras 108 times using a Crystal (Sphatik) or Lotus Seed (Kamal Gatta) mala.

What it is: The mixture of milk and Gangajal used to bathe the conch in Step 3.
Collect this water in a separate small bowl. After the Pooja, the head of the family should sprinkle this water on all family members.
This is considered 'Prasad' that removes physical ailments and negative thoughts from the person.
After the Tilak (Step 5), fill the conch itself with fresh Gangajal and a pinch of turmeric. Let it sit during the Mantra chanting.
Once the Pooja is finished and the Aarti is done, take the conch in your hand. Walk through every room of your house (except the bathroom) and sprinkle this water using a flower or a leaf.
Do this immediately after the Abhijit Muhurat ends (around 12:40 PM).
This purifies the Vaastu of the home, invites Goddess Lakshmi into every corner, and removes "Daridrata" (poverty/scarcity).
Perform a simple Aarti of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu. After the Pooja, keep the Shankh in your Tijori (Safe/Locker) or keep it at your Pooja Altar permanently. Since it is Akshay Tritiya, the energy of this Pooja is "Akshay" (never-ending), meaning its benefits will continue throughout the year.
Never blow into a Dakshinawarti Shankh. It is only for worship and water rituals.
