Why is there a need to work on menstrual health at Ashram Shala (Residential School)? In Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, many children complete their education from class 1st to 10th-12th from Ashram Shala. Basic arrangements have been made for this in several districts of Dantewada and Bastar. Children spend 8-10 months in a year in the ashram school. Therefore, they are dependent on the ashram school and teachers for many things. Such as food, clothing, education, health, things required to maintain personal hygiene and mental support. They are also dependent on schools to get information related to various topics. Children spend their teenage years at residential school. They go through many changes in teenage years, they have a lot of questions and need mental support and guidance. Menstruation begins in the teenage stage and then a mother or elder sister is needed. It is necessary to prepare and inform children about these changes. Because the children are away from their families, it is very important that ashram schools and teachers be prepared.

Hope you are doing well. I made a video (in Hindi) on how to make cloth pads at home with material available at home. I have shown a simple technique which requires less or no training in stitching. This could be helpful especially when we can't step out to buy sanitary pads or can't find them in nearby stores. Please share this with other people who might benefit like rural women, your house help, people all alone, people who can't afford pads and so on.

Blind Women in Chhattisgarh Attend a Workshop on Learning About Menstrual Hygiene and Making Sanitary Napkins

Women and girls with disability and especially those with visual impairment are vulnerable to infections owing to unhealthy menstrual practices. This gets further compounded by the sociocultural and religious myths and misconceptions that exist in society.

Samerth, an organisation implementing Social Inclusion Programme for Sightsavers in Chhattisgarh, organised a training on Menstruation Health Management (MHM) on 26th June at Raipur.

The training aimed at promoting health and hygiene among women and girls with disability and train them on preparing low-cost eco-friendly sanitary napkins. Forty women and girls with disability from project area participated in the training along with 10 master trainers and SHG members from Department of Women & Child Development (DoWCD). Trainers from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and NEEDS Mumbai facilitated the training. Mr. Shrish Kalyani, Chief Minister (CM) Fellow, Department of Social Welfare was present for the last session of the training.

During the training discussions were held around gender issues, pregnancy, reproductive organs and menstruation as a natural phenomenon in women. For women with visual impairment a book in Braille was provided to enhance their knowledge on reproductive organs. They were provided information on maintaining menstrual hygiene and its importance. Hands on training was provided to the participants on making low-cost eco-friendly sanitary napkins for themselves and for selling in local markets.

The participants expressed that the training has been helpful for them in breaking the many confusions they had regarding menstruation and learning about the importance of clean menstrual practices. They demanded that their caretakers be also trained on these aspects. According to Manju, a blind participant “I have learnt a lot about the menstruation and clean practices. I will be careful from now onwards. I will be sharing this with my mother, as she is the one who takes care for me."
