Iron salts, such as ferrous sulfate or ferrous fumarate, can interact with several substances that affect their absorption or cause adverse effects.
☑️They commonly interact with antacids, proton pump inhibitors, and H2 blockers, which reduce stomach acidity and decrease iron absorption.
☑️Calcium supplements, dairy products, tea, and coffee also inhibit absorption due to their content of calcium, tannins, or polyphenols.
☑️Conversely, vitamin C (ascorbic acid) enhances iron absorption by reducing ferric iron (Fe³⁺) to the more absorbable ferrous form (Fe²⁺).
☑️Certain antibiotics, such as tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones, can form complexes with iron, reducing the effectiveness of both drugs.
☑️To minimize damage and interactions, iron should be taken on an empty stomach or with a source of vitamin C, and other drugs or supplements that interfere with absorption should be taken at least 2 hours apart.
☑️If gastrointestinal irritation occurs, taking iron with a small amount of food may reduce discomfort while maintaining effectiveness.
