Urinary tract infections in babies often present differently than in older children or adults. Infants cannot express discomfort, so symptoms appear in subtle ways. A fever without an obvious cause is often the earliest warning sign. Low energy, unusual sleepiness, excessive crying, or irritability may indicate discomfort or infection. Poor feeding or repeated vomiting can occur because infection affects the baby’s overall well-being. Poor weight gain may be observed if the infection persists. Strong-smelling or cloudy urine suggests bacterial growth in the urinary tract.
Early evaluation is extremely important. If left untreated, a UTI can spread to the kidneys and cause long-term damage. Prompt medical assessment, urine testing, and appropriate treatment help ensure complete recovery and protect the child’s kidney health.
