There are no words to contain the full experience of our Journey here in India with such an amazing group of adventurous souls. Our journey started with a smaller group in North India, for a tour of the Golden Triangle, Delhi, Agra (Taj Mahal), and Jaipur where we were able to experience some of the most magnificent ancient monuments from the Mughal Empire before we all hopped on a plane to South India.
When we all finally met in Kerala, we were 38… the largest group we’ve ever organized and guided in a foreign land… all ready for an epic adventure in Kerala. For this trip, we broke away from our traditional retreat format for an adventure showcasing some of the most incredible places that India has to offer. We’ve done a lot of travel around India in our six months in India, but no place has quite captured our hearts like Kerala, and we were eager to share some of our favorite places with others. This journey has been in the making since 2018.
Kerala welcomed us with open arms, as the people shared their culture, their history, their food, and the beauty of their lands with us.
Some of the highlights of our trip:
🇮🇳Surprise up close dolphin encounters in Cherai while on kayaks and a power boat
🇮🇳Visiting the old town of Fort Kochin, experiencing some of the history of the first European settlers to visit the region, as well as exploring the old streets, shops, and getting to witness how the present day fisherman do their day’s work.
🇮🇳 Traveling to Munnar to experience the majestic tea plantations, visit a factory where tea is processed, taking an epic “Jeep Safari” through the mountains to Kolukkumalai
🇮🇳 Boating and Hiking at the Periyar Wildlife Reserve, spotting animals like the malabar giant squirrel, several species of monkeys, rare birds, gaurs, sambar deer, and so much more.
🇮🇳 Staying high up in the hilltops in Thekkady
🇮🇳 Taking a beautiful houseboat through the backwaters of Kerala in Kumarakom
🇮🇳 Exploring the beautiful beachside cliffs of Varkala
🇮🇳 Boating through the backwaters to our beautiful island resort in Poovar
🇮🇳 Countless heartwarming encounters with locals, beautiful cultural offerings of music, dance, Kalaripayattu (martial arts), and so much more.
Our days were full, starting with Yoga accompanied by live music every morning at 6 AM, having breakfast and then heading out for our day’s activities, changing the place every 2-3 days, and exploring much of Kerala’s beautiful countryside by road. On many evenings, we had Sound Journeys, Meditations, and cultural offerings. All of this was while staying at some of Kerala’s best destination hotels (and a couple that weren’t so great… a lot has changed in the 8 years since we were hear last 🤦♂️).
Traveling in India is always unpredictable. Leading a group of 38 adventurous travelers in India is even more unpredictable at times. Our group took everything in stride, as our daily schedules shifted and adapted to everything that was happening in the moment. The one thing that we have grown to learn in our journeys to India that surrender is an important theme, and surrendering to what India has to offer will reveal its magic. If you try to grip, control, and hold on tight to your plans, preconceptions, and expectations, India has a way of shaking you up and triggering you in the worst of ways. We cant speak for everyone, but I think most of us had some days where India was having its way with us, but it’s almost always followed by a breakthrough, and a deeper opening of the love that India has to share. This is where the transformation comes with India, as you dance between the extremes in the mystical land. This was a journey that we will hold near and dear to our hearts for the rest of our lives, and we’re so grateful to everyone who made this journey possible… our organizers, our incredible guide Remya, the countless people involved with transporting us safely through all of these destinations, who were constantly arranging and rearranging things behind the scenes, all of the hospitality teams at every destination, the people who fed us, and all of the Indian people who welcomed us in their country, and filled our hearts with smiles and lots of love. The people of India are what make it such a special place, and we cannot begin to offer them enough thanks.
We would like to offer an additional thank you to all who joined us and to our incredible facilitation team (Nancy, Jeremy, Jane, Parker, and Cecily).
Pictures can only capture a glimpse of the beauty and adventure that this trip was, but we’ve posted a lot of them for you all to see!
