What Is an Epidermal Nevus?

An epidermal nevus is a benign (non-cancerous) skin lesion made up of excess skin cells. It usually appears at birth or in early childhood and may look like:

Brown, tan, or skin-colored patches

Raised, rough, or wart-like texture

Follows a "linear" or segmental pattern along skin lines

There are different types, including:

Linear epidermal nevus

Nevus sebaceous

Inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus (ILVEN)

🛠️ Removal Options

Epidermal nevi are generally harmless, but people may choose to remove them for cosmetic or medical reasons (especially if irritated or growing). Removal options include:

1. Surgical Excision

Most effective for complete removal

May leave a scar

Often used for larger or raised lesions

2. Laser Therapy

CO2 laser or Er:YAG laser can reduce or flatten lesions

Less scarring than surgery but may not completely remove nevus

Often used for cosmetic improvement

3. Cryotherapy (Freezing)

May be used on small lesions

Less predictable results

4. Topical Treatments
Limited effectiveness

Sometimes retinoids or other creams may be used, especially for ILVEN, but usually not curative
