Because in sudden cardiac arrest, the heart doesn’t just stop, it goes into a deadly rhythm. A defibrillator is important because it can restore a survivable heart rhythm when CPR alone is not enough.
Here’s the medical reality, clearly and simply:
Sudden cardiac arrest is most often caused by ventricular fibrillation or pulseless ventricular tachycardia.
These rhythms mean the heart is electrically chaotic blood is not being pumped.
CPR keeps blood flowing to the brain and heart,
but only a defibrillator can stop the abnormal rhythm and allow the heart to reset.
Every minute without defibrillation:
Survival decreases by 7–10%.

This is why AEDs are a core part of:

Basic Life Support (BLS)

ACLS algorithms

Public and workplace emergency response systems
