The women before us were played by bigger interests into falling for the feminist movement and in the process losing the right to mother freely. We have to get it back.
They felt back then they were choosing something better but didn't realize they would be giving something up in the process. It should have been about having the right to choose a career (and other rights) but not that both parents would be forced to work in order to pay a living and no one to care for the children.
Yes, we gained lots of wonderful rights, and yes, we also lost one of the most important things: the right to our children freely.
Being a SAHM has become a luxury.

This deserved a permanent spot on my feed.

Welcome to this world Líf Andradóttir ✨
(Líf means Life in Icelandic)

How much was I looking forward to giving birth naturally at home! No meds, just surrounded by my little family and my 2 midwives (or Light mothers as we call them in Icelandic). How grateful I am to (Arney & Ásta) for being incredibly supportive, wise, and knowing exactly how to guide me throughout the process. Grateful for my loving rock Andri who held me through every single contraction, knowing exactly what to do and say each step of the way, and for big sister Sól, who had sooo much patience all those hours while mamma was giving birth to little Líf.

I could write extensively about why this was incomparably better than giving birth at the hospital. How amazing I feel, how amazing baby feels, the peace surrounding it all. Yes, it was mentally and physically challenging, but I felt my body throughout it all. I felt the pain and worked with it, I cried, and screamed when pushing and felt peace, power, and in control throughout it.
I've heard many women sharing their homebirth stories and they all have this power in them. I get why now...! We are meant to do it this way, to let the body do what the body is capable of doing.
As a dear friend -mom of 4- recently told me: "I feel like a goddess after each homebirth" That. is. how. I. feel. exactly.

Becoming a mother is a gift 🤍

Standing on the stage, right before I welcomed the President of Iceland to the stage. I took a few breaths and paused. I thought about how 11 years ago this country welcomed me with open arms and now I was about to welcome him on stage.
It felt surreal but it also reflected exactly why I fell in love with Iceland. The equality of opportunities is enormous. This country is loving, kind and respectful. It is my heart ❤️

As I progress through Gabor Maté's book "The Myth of Normal" I go from big aha moments, to moments where truths I already intuitively felt to be true are confirmed.
The topics so far covered are Motherhood, Pregnancy, Addiction, and I am now in the part about Mental illnesses.

I have worked with people from all walks of life, with physical and mental conditions rooted in childhood event or traumas in life that caused a big disconnect from themselves. I agree so deeply with Gabor Mate's view about this disconnect being an adaptation of the brain to the loss of connection. Physiological shut down mechanism to terminate chronic stress. To alliviatte grief and rage and inhibit behaviours that could cause danger.

Tackling the cause of the symptoms creates reconnection. Healing and rebalancing.
Tackling only the symptoms, temporarily alters the brain's chemicals - which can be temporarily helpful as an assisting tool if done smartly- but it won't treat the cause of the disconnect.

Overmedication isn't the way forward. Reconnection is. Gently guiding parents and individuals to become aware of their environment and the increase stress surrounding all aspects of our life. society's pressure, parental pressure, relationship pressure, individual pressure - we eat and breathe stress. Longing unconsciously for connection, unconditional acceptance and most of all LOVE.

We get to do things differently. For our children ❤️

Pregnancy should be sacred. Everyone's focus should be on the woman. And the woman's focus must be on the baby and not on the husband or the job.
Society needs to protect pregnant women. It takes a world to make a baby
-Dr. Gabor Maté. The Myth of Normal

Wonderful chapter about pregnancy and the importance of protecting women throughout that time, not just for the sake of the mother, but for the sake of the baby and for society ❤️

Breastfeeding. Baby latches and that is it, right?
There is so much misinformation. But one thing that stood out when learning about breastfeeding was how clear the World Health Organization and UNICEF are with their breastfeeding guidelines and statistics.

A clear up-to-date message is what expectant and new mothers/parents need.

-Exclusively breastfeed for the first 6 months
-Breastfeed on demand. Day and night.
-No bottles, pacifiers, etc.
- After 6 months. Breastfeeding combined with food until at least 2 years and beyond.

Iceland's Directorate of health -among many other countries- still recommend outdated guidelines, such as introducing pureed food to 4 months old rather than the up-to-date guideline to exclusively breastfeed for the first 6 months (unless medical/health conditions prevent this of course).

All midwifes, pediatric nurses, pediatrician, etc. (all health care providers in maternity) should be certified/educated as breastfeeding consultants. They are not necessarily knowledgeable enough to be giving any type of advice on the topic. Yet, many do. Which can lead to negative outcomes. (this was my story as a new mom)

There are 2 birth centers in Iceland and the new both have certified breastfeeding consultants on their team who provide education regularly 👏👏

And the amazing Hulda Lína (Hulda Sigurlína Þórðardóttir) who is head of the Icelandic breastfeeding association and the absolute best breastfeeding & maternity consultant, just started her website vonibrjosti.is where she offers an online course and the option to book her for private consultations ☺️❤️👏✨
