Making black seed oil at home is possible, although it takes patience. You need clean black seeds, also known as black cumin or nigella sativa, and a method to extract the oil. The cold pressed method is the healthiest because it keeps the nutrients intact. Below is a simple home friendly process you can follow.
One. Clean the seeds
Pick out stones and dirt. Rinse the seeds in clean water and spread them out to dry completely. They must be fully dry so the oil does not go bad quickly.
Two. Lightly warm the seeds
Pour the dry seeds into a clean pan. Warm them gently on very low heat for a few minutes. Do not fry them and do not let them change colour. The idea is to help release the natural oil.
Three. Grind the seeds
Use a blender or a clean dry grinder to blend the warm seeds into a fine powder. The smoother the powder, the easier the extraction.
Four. Mix with a carrier oil
Pour the powder into a clean jar. Add a little warm olive oil or warm coconut oil. The oil should not be hot, only warm. Stir very well until it forms a smooth paste.
Five. Let it sit
Cover the jar and keep it in a warm place for one to two weeks. Shake the jar every day so the oil extracts into the carrier oil.
Six. Strain the oil
After one to two weeks, pour the mixture into a clean bowl and strain it using a fine cloth. Squeeze out all the oil slowly. This oil is now infused black seed oil.
Seven. Store it well
Pour the oil into a clean brown bottle or any airtight container. Keep it in a cool dark place. This helps it last longer and keeps the nutrients strong.
If you want pure black seed oil with no carrier oil at all, you will need a home oil press machine. That is the only way to get the thick pure cold pressed type. The method above still works well for home use and still gives strong benefits.
