➡Spinal navigation is revolutionizing veterinary surgery

At Overvet, we believe that innovation is born from collaboration and shared vision.

For this reason, we are proud to announce an important milestone: the beginning of a new era for our PEDRO SYSTEM.

In collaboration with Imaginalis, and thanks to the scientific contribution of Prof. Filippo Maria Martini and Dr. Omar Del Vecchio, we have completed the first step of navigated surgery applied to our fixation system.

The work was carried out at Ortovet, within a highly specialized environment, and the results obtained on the anatomical specimen were extremely promising: decimal-level precision that opens up revolutionary scenarios for both patient and surgeon safety.

Thanks to the continuous support of Imaginalis’ engineering team, the project is progressing rapidly.
Our goal is clear: to perform the first surgery on a live patient by the summer.

The future of veterinary spinal surgery also passes through here.

A sincere thank you to all the professionals who contributed to this first phase of development and research: Prof. Filippo Maria Martini, Dott. Omar Del Vecchio, Ing. Cosimo Lorenzetto, Dott.ssa Ilaria Grossi, Ing. Eva Rossi, Ing. Lorenzo Mandelli, Tommaso Pizzamiglio e Davide Pizzamiglio.

In veterinary care, our mission goes beyond treatment — it’s about restoring life, energy, and joy to our four-legged friends.

With Pedro System, our system for distraction and stabilization in veterinary surgery, we are helping animals regain what truly matters: the ability to run, to play and to simply be themselves again.

Because healing isn’t just about fixing a problem.
It’s about giving life back its freedom.

In this video, Ing. Lorenzo Mandelli, Research and Development Engineer at Overvet, presents the Pedro System and explains its development and clinical value.
The Pedro System is a spinal fixation solution designed for the veterinary field to treat spinal conditions and trauma in companion animals, particularly dogs and cats. The name “Pedro” comes from the first patient treated using this system.

It consists of polyaxial screws and rods that connect the vertebrae and stabilize the spinal column. The system was developed in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano to ensure high mechanical performance and safety for both the surgeon and the patient.

This solution represents a significant advancement in veterinary spinal stabilization, replacing outdated techniques such as pins or screws combined with PMMA bone cement. The Pedro System reflects an innovative approach aimed at improving surgical outcomes and enhancing the quality of life of animal patients.

Last week, the practical–theoretical course “PEDRO SYSTEM® – An Innovative Approach to Spinal Trauma”, organized in collaboration with Alcyon Italia , was held with great success and participation.

The event represented an important opportunity for professional development in the clinical and biomechanical management of spinal disorders, offering an in-depth look at the innovative Pedro System® applied to veterinary neurology, integrating theory with clinical practice.

The course featured high-profile speakers: Dr. Massimo Baroni, European Specialist in Veterinary Neurology, whose scientific contribution, clarity of presentation and outstanding willingness to engage and share knowledge provided exceptional value for all participants; Eng. Lorenzo Mandelli, Research and Development Engineer, who explored the descriptive and biomechanical aspects.

A special thank you to Alcyon Italia for their warm hospitality, and a heartfelt and particular acknowledgement to Dr. Massimo Baroni for his professionalism, expertise, and passion in sharing his experience, which played a decisive role in the success of the event.

Application of the “Pedro System” in canine spinal traumatology

We present the case of Dudi, a 3-year-old mixed-breed dog whose surgical intervention was successfully performed by Dr. Massimo Baroni.

➡️ Clinical history: acute traumatic event (car accident).

➡️ Neurological examination: Dudi presented with a normal mental status, paraplegia, marked spinal pain, and a Shiff-Sherrington posture. Deep pain perception was preserved in the hind limbs.

➡️ Neurolocalization: spinal cord segment T3–L3.

This case highlights the importance of a rapid and systematic neurological assessment in acute spinal trauma and demonstrates the practical application of the Pedro System in guiding clinical decision-making in canine spinal traumatology.

In 2025, we witnessed firsthand how the Pedro System has transformed the lives of so many patients: dogs and cats who are now walking, playing, and returning to the activities they love thanks to successful spinal surgery procedures.

A special thank you to all the veterinarians, specialists, and families who shared these moments with us — together, we are improving the future of our four-legged friends.

Watch the video to discover how a single system can change hundreds of lives.
