Command is the conductor. The crew is the orchestra. The tools are the instrumentsI’ve tried centering my entire career around teachings that were victim and suppression focused. Aligning my focus with and . Stretch and suppressions tactics with and . I took great education from Andy Frederick’s and Dennis LeGear. All of these dudes I have great appreciation for. .
Then I promoted. My job changed. My job replaced a Halligan for a sharpie. I went from the officer seat to a pick up truck. For me the mission was the same but my physical tactics changed. It was actively directing and not actively suppressing or searching. Believe it or not, I really embraced Blue Card. I needed it. I needed to organize and remain focused.

There’s a war of culture right now. Aggressive Tactics vs Blue Card Command. As if they’re not already aligned. What I have found is that command officers who were never rooted in Firemanship were/are the Franz Ferdinand of our industry. These catalyst figures that resulted in a culture war where it’s regarded as Firemanship tactics have no place in Blue Card Command. And vice-versa. .
I believe you had unfamiliar, undertrained, scared individuals that achieved rank. And when Blue Card Command hit the scene it was the first organized command level option and it took off. But there were no foundational tactics that supported decision making for these individuals.
But never once, and I’ve listened to hundreds of hours of the Blue Card boys talk. Never once have I heard don’t search. Don’t VES. Don’t stretch.
My point is, it’s easy to point the finger at NFPA or Blue Card and call them the reason our job is soft. I disagree. Leaders failed firefighters and those firefighters were led to believe they were doing a mission. And the mission was wrong. It became weak. Them First is the way. And it’s command’s job to make sure the tools, training and tactics are centered with that.
