We often think of love as a feeling for one person, but Ayurveda and modern integrative medicine—like the work of Dr. Robert Schneider—suggest it is actually a biological nutrient for our entire system.

In Vedic wisdom, the heart is the home of Ojas, the golden essence that governs your immunity, your vitality, and that literal “glow” we see in healthy people. Dr. Schneider’s research at MIU shows that our heart health depends on the shift from contraction to expansion. When we are stressed or fearful, we contract. But when we experience “Big Love”—that expansive, universal kindness—our nervous system shifts into a state of repair and growth.

The Sanskrit word for love is Sneha, which also means “oil.” Just as oil protects a machine from rust and keeps it moving smoothly, love lubricates our life. It prevents us from becoming brittle, dry, or hard-hearted. When you choose compassion, you aren’t just being “nice”—you are coating your cells in Sneha and building your Ojas.

This Valentine’s week, don’t just wait for a spark from someone else. Lean into the expansion. Practice a little “Big Love” for the world around you, and watch your own heart bloom.

In the middle of winter.

In the middle of everything going on in the world.
This practice feels more relevant than ever.

Tree Pose looks simple, but it’s quietly powerful.
One foot rooted. One leg lifted.
You don’t force balance, you listen for it.

Ayurveda teaches that winter is a time when Vata can easily become aggravated: cold, dry, restless, scattered.
It’s not just the season that feels like this.
The world does too.

Standing on one leg, you feel every wobble.
And instead of fighting it, you soften.
You root down.
You steady the breath.

The Bhagavad Gita offers this timeless guidance:

योगस्थः कुरु कर्माणि
Yogasthaḥ kuru karmāṇi

“Established in being, perform action.”

First, find steadiness.
Then, move through the world.

The Yoga Sutras echo the same truth.
Yoga is the settling of the fluctuations of the mind.
From that inner stillness, clarity and right action become possible.

Tree Pose becomes a lived practice of this wisdom.

Strong legs.
Open hips.
A calmer nervous system.
Better focus.
And a reminder that we can be rooted and flexible at the same time.

This winter, I’m choosing practices that help me establish myself in stillness, so I can meet the world with more presence and less reactivity.

How are you finding balance these days?

This is my kind of winter bowl. Warm, silky, salty in the right way, and somehow still light.

Cavolo nero gently wilted in a golden broth, poured over a smooth white bean crema, finished with crunchy pangrattato, lemon zest, and good olive oil. It tastes like Tuscany in the most comforting way.

And it’s full of Ayurvedic wisdom for cold days: warm, cooked, grounding, and nourishing, with just enough brightness at the end to keep everything feeling alive. The kind of comfort food that supports digestion and calms the nervous system at the same time.

If you’re craving something cozy, simple, and deeply satisfying, this is it.

True balance isn’t loud. It’s steady.

It’s when the body feels supported, the mind feels clear, and the heart feels calm. Not perfect, not constant, just something we return to again and again.

If you’re craving more balance in your energy, digestion, sleep, or daily rhythm, I’d love to support you.

In a world that often tells us happiness comes from possessions, achievements, or even perfect Instagram feeds, the real secret to a joyful life is actually much simpler, and far more profound: meaningful social connections.

Think about the moments that truly make your heart sing. Are they not often shared experiences? A laughter-filled dinner with friends, a comforting hug from a loved one, a deep conversation that makes you feel truly seen and understood. These are the moments that weave the rich tapestry of a happy life.
Humans are fundamentally social creatures. We thrive on interaction, support, and a sense of belonging.

So, let’s make a conscious effort to prioritize these invaluable connections. Put down your phone, look into someone’s eyes, share a meal, lend an ear, or simply send a heartfelt message. These small acts of connection are the true building blocks of a happy and fulfilling life.

What are your favorite ways to connect with the people you love? Share in the comments!

Roasted sweet potatoes nestled on a bed of creamy labaneh, finished with za’atar and a drizzle of olive oil—simple, grounding, and deeply nourishing. In Ayurveda, sweet potatoes are naturally sweet and warming, making them especially supportive in winter, when the body craves stability and comfort. Roasting enhances their digestibility and brings out their natural sweetness, while labaneh adds a cooling, creamy balance without heaviness.

This dish is also a beautiful example of how Mediterranean food can align seamlessly with Ayurvedic wisdom. Seasonal vegetables, healthy fats, mindful use of herbs and spices, and simple preparation all support digestion, balance, and vitality. Za’atar gently awakens the digestive fire, olive oil nourishes the tissues, and together these ingredients create a meal that is both delicious and deeply sustaining.

Proof that eating in harmony with nature can be timeless, intuitive, and incredibly satisfying

Let’s be real: the calendar flipped, but I’m still the same person I was last week. No “new year, new me” pressure here. No unrealistic resolutions that feel like a chore by February.

Instead of trying to change who I am, I’m focusing on nurturing who I am—especially during these freezing winter days. When the temperature drops, our “Agni” (digestive fire) needs a little extra love to keep our immunity strong and our energy steady.

How I’m staying balanced right now:
• Sip on Warmth: Swapping the iced drinks for ginger tea or warm lemon water to stoke the internal fire.
• Seasonal Nourishment: Leaning into root vegetables, soups, and warming spices like turmeric and cinnamon.
• Oil Pulling & Abhyanga: Keeping the skin hydrated and the lymphatic system moving when the air gets dry.
• Rest as Resistance: Accepting that winter is a time for hibernation, not just high-intensity output.

Camel pose, Ustrasana, is one of those shapes that wakes up the whole body and reminds us that life moves forward, even when the year is almost over.

On this full moon, the last one of the year, I love practicing Ustrasana. It opens the heart, lifts the chest, and gives the back a delicious stretch. There is something celebratory about it, almost like leaning back to look at the moon and say thank you.

In Ayurveda, winter needs warmth, movement, circulation. Camel pose brings heat, especially through the chest and upper back, where stagnation likes to hide. When we open this area, energy can flow. Breath becomes deeper. The mood becomes lighter. The mind, which easily contracts in winter, suddenly feels spacious.

This pose reminds us that joy is medicine. Expansion is medicine. A little drama is medicine. Tonight, as the moon shines bright and round, try kneeling on a mat, pressing the hips forward, lifting the heart, and gently opening. Stay for a few breaths and enjoy the sensation of release, relief, and celebration.

It is an invitation to let the year go and welcome a new one with softness and courage.
