Dr. Dan Seigel’s hand model of the brain 🧠 provides insight into what we really need when our rational brain goes offline.

Understanding what happens when a student, colleague or even parent “loses it”, helps us help them.

The moment a person is overwhelmed by strong, unpleasant emotions, it’s not the right time to give consequences, ask for complicated explanations, or assign blame. In reality, they probably can’t even hear you. Excess stimuli in the form of talking, touching, even joking, might even provoke an escalation in behavior.

Space for de-escalation is part of conflict management. Depending on the situation, various strategies can be used, all with the goal of allowing the “thinking brain” to come back online. Some might involve:

• the calm, regulated presence of another person,
• a change in environment,
• some light distraction “would you like some water?”
• a brief reformulation in the form of a statement, such as “You’re concerned about your child” or “this doesn’t seem fair to you.”
• repeating back their narration of the problem, allowing them to hear their own words

And many others.

For the last 10 years we’ve been talking with educators about how to transform conflict in schools into a possible opportunity for growth.

I personally like to anchor my feet into the ground, and feel that solidity while I focus on a few breaths. What helps you get back “online”?
