📣 📣📣 BMC Veterinary Research is calling for submissions to our Collection on Zoonotic Diseases.

🧑🏼‍🔬🧑🏼‍💻📑 Our Colleague, Dr. Luca Villa, Member of the Editorial Board of BMC Veterinary Research, is acting as Guest Editor for this Collection on Zoonotic Diseases.

🦠🪱🔬 Zoonotic diseases are infections caused by bacteria, viruses, prion, parasites, and fungi that are naturally transmissible from vertebrate animals to humans either through direct contact with the animal itself, or through food, water, or the environment. Currently, zoonotic pathogens are causing enormous economic losses to the livestock industry, and pose an ever growing global risk to public and animal health due to our close relationship with animals – whether it is companion or wild animals, or animals in agriculture.

🐶🐮🐗 At present, there are approximately 150 known zoonotic diseases worldwide that are transmitted to humans by both wild and domestic animal populations, and it is currently estimated that 75% of all emerging infectious diseases are zoonotic in nature. Today, many zoonoses can cause recurring disease outbreaks, while others have the potential to cause a global pandemic.

👨🏽‍⚕️🐾🌍 In the view of the One Health approach, recognizing that the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and interdependent, this collection and call for papers aims to bring together original research with the latest updates on zoonotic diseases that cover, but are not limited to, the etiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, detection, diagnosis, treatment, and control/prevention of zoonotic diseases. The collection will consider research articles, case reports, study protocols, reviews and opinion papers. For reviews and opinion papers, please contact the journal with a pre-submission enquiry.

Our Post-Doc Luca has just come back from California, where he attended the Environmental Toxoplasmosis Workshop and the International Congress on Toxoplasmosis and Toxoplasma gondii Research. This was a great opportunity for him to find out the latest research on this relevant zoonotic protozoa of humans and animals and to meet other researcher in this field to set up network and future collaboration projects.

Our colleague Dr. Alessia Gazzonis, together with the other Guest Editors, on the occasion of the International Women's Day, are honored to invite you to participate in the “Women in Parasitology” article collection.

Aware of the gender inequality still present in science and generally in academia, this special issue aims to promote the work of women researchers and to highlight their impact in the field of Parasitology.

Today in lab we analysed the ruminal content of a bovine animal. The result can be seen in these images showing young adults of the rumen flukes, belonging to the family of Paramphistomidae. - Photo 1 and 2: flukes collected from the rumen and isolated on a plate - Photo 3: parasites attached to the rumen mucosa - Photo 4: effects caused by adult parasites on the rumen mucosa 🐮🐮

This week in the laboratory we did practical session on mycology with the students of the 3rd year of Veterinary Medicine course. 👩🏻‍🔬🧑🏻‍🔬
But pay attention, these fungi are not those good to eat! 🍄🤭
Indeed, these are cause of disease in both animals and humans.
An accurate diagnosis is fundamental to treat and prevent fungal diseases. 🧫🔬
