🩺 Scientific Publication of the Month – Episode 15

Pulmonary nodules are being detected more frequently than ever — but choosing the right diagnostic approach remains a challenge.

Is it about accuracy?
Safety?
Or finding the right balance between both?

In this episode, Prof. Felix Herth discusses a recent study comparing two commonly used biopsy techniques — and what this could mean for daily practice.

FellowScope goes live on 7 May.

This is the first episode of a new Pulmonology on Air stream dedicated to fellows in interventional pulmonology — a space where real clinical experience takes the lead. Fellows present the cases they have performed, talk openly about their challenges, and share practical learning with a global audience of peers and faculty.

For fellows, it’s about visibility and growth.
For the wider community, it’s about learning directly from the next generation of clinicians shaping the field.

In the first episode, Dr. Xu Li from Shandong Public Health Clinical Center, China, will present a case on the Diagnostic Utility of Bronchoscopic Transparenchymal Nodule Access (BTPNA).

Real cases. Honest discussion. Global learning.

🔦 Our first FellowScope case spotlight comes from India.

Join us as we feature a Foreign Body Extraction case presented by the team from Yashoda Hospitals, India.

Presented by Dr. B.K. Vasudha and Dr. Wangbor Sungoh, this session will explore the clinical scenario, procedural approach, challenges faced, and key learning points from a real interventional pulmonology case.

FellowScope was created to give fellows and emerging physicians a global stage to share real experiences, practical insights, and grow through discussion with an international audience.

Be part of the first live FellowScope episode on May 7th.

What is FellowScope?
FellowScope is a new educational stream from Pulmonology on Air where fellows present interventional cases they have performed and discuss:
✔ the clinical context
✔ the procedure
✔ the challenges they faced
✔what they learned
✔ how the case helped shape their development

It is designed to create a global stage for fellows while giving the wider community an opportunity to learn from real-world cases and honest discussion.

Not just a presentation. A platform for progression.

In medicine, growth does not come only from presenting polished success.

It also comes from discussing:
- difficult decisions
- technical challenges
- uncertainty
- lessons learned in real practice

That is why we created FellowScope.
A new Pulmonology on Air stream where fellows can present real interventional cases, reflect on their challenges, and learn in front of a global audience.
Because the future of interventional pulmonology depends not only on expertise, but on the willingness of the next generation to step forward, share, and grow.

🩺 We are proud to introduce FellowScope, a new stream from Pulmonology on Air dedicated to the next generation of interventional pulmonology physicians.

FellowScope gives fellows the opportunity to present interventional cases they have performed, share their challenges openly, and discuss their learning with a global audience of peers and faculty.

This initiative reflects something we strongly believe at POA: education should not only spotlight established experts. It should also create space for emerging physicians to grow, be seen, and become part of an international professional community.

FellowScope is part of POA’s own investment in building a global network of upcoming IP physicians.
The first live episode will take place on May 7th.

When treating COPD patients with hyperinflation, we often focus on technique, targeting, and patient selection…
But are we overlooking something more fundamental?

In this month’s episode, Prof. Felix explores a recent publication that raises an important question:
❓ Could gender influence how patients respond to bronchoscopic lung volume reduction?
❓ What does this mean for treatment decisions?
❓ And could it change how we approach dosing and outcomes in the future?

🫁 Scientific Publication of the Month – March

COPD is one of the leading respiratory diseases worldwide — but not all COPD patients are the same.

In this month’s episode, we focus on a phenotype that is often underestimated but highly impactful for patients: chronic bronchitis with mucus overproduction.

Is there more we can do beyond pharmacological therapy?
Could endoscopic approaches play a larger role in managing symptoms?

Prof. Felix discusses a recent publication exploring a bronchoscopic technology designed specifically for this patient group.

Pulmonology on Air on behalf of Lys Medical:

What a day!

The Pulmonology On Air Global Event 2025 brought together over 2000 participants from all across the globe. We’re proud to have showcased the power of Iriscope in two groundbreaking live cases:

🔹 Dr. Samy Lachkar demonstrated a peripheral lung nodule biopsy using Iriscope under local anaesthesia, guided by 3D planning.

🔹 Dr. Olivier Taton performed a complex case using Iriscope with CBCT navigation, highlighting the precision and reach of our 1.3 mm video probe.

Thank you to all who joined us and contributed to the vibrant global discussion. Your questions and engagement made this event truly interactive and impactful.

Pulmonology On Air on behalf of Lys Medical:

The Pulmonology On Air Global Event 2025 was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when technology meets purpose. Iriscope was at the centre of two live cases that demonstrated how direct visualisation of peripheral nodules—even Ground Glass Opacities (GGOs)—can transform patient outcomes.

💡 From real-time navigation under CBCT to local anaesthesia procedures with 3D planning, Iriscope proved its value in improving diagnostic yield and reducing invasiveness.

With 77.5% of attendees being physicians and a global audience spanning from China to Egypt, the impact of this event was truly international.

We’re grateful for your trust and curiosity. Let’s continue pushing the boundaries of interventional pulmonology—together.

🫁 Scientific Publication of the Month – February

Asthma management has changed dramatically over the years — but are we using all the tools available to guide treatment decisions?

In this month’s episode, Prof. Felix discusses a study that looks beyond standard biomarkers and asks a provocative question:
- Could bronchoscopy play a role in personalizing therapy for severe, uncontrolled asthma?
- What if tissue-level information tells us something blood tests can’t?
