📍 The paper “Performance of new hypothermic cornea storage media with an antimycotic tablet in comparison to traditional hypothermic media during simulated eye bank processing” has been published in the scientific journal . 💪

The object of the study is the comparison of the performance of two cold corneal storage media during routine eye banking processing procedures for penetrating keratoplasty ( ), Descemet’s stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty ( ) or Descemet’s membrane endothelial keratoplasty ( ).

On one side, the performance of (AL.CHI.MI.A. S.R.L., Italy), a medium containing 2.5 μg/mL of Amphotericin B and on the other side -GS (Bausch & Lomb, USA), the antimycotic-free state-of-art medium for cold corneal storage used in the USA.

🆕 The scientific journal Experimental Eye Research has recently published the paper titled "Safety of silicone oils as intraocular medical device: an in vitro cytotoxicity study”.

The study assesses the of Low Molecular Weight Components ( ) and conventional 1000 cSt silicone oils (SO) with different levels of purification provided by ALCHIMIA Srl using the validated in vitro cytotoxicity test 🧫 by direct contact according to ISO 10993-5 on BALB 3T3 and human-derived ARPE-19 cells.

The results excluded acute direct toxicity on retinal cells of both SO and LMWC as a factor influencing the biocompatibility of the purified SO 1000 cSt intended for intraocular use.

The past unfortunate events pushed all PFCL manufacturers to ensure surgeons about the high purity and safety of their products.
To verify the of some PFCLs available in the market, the Alchilife laboratories has set tests using the validated direct contact methods on the BALB 3T3 and human-derived ARPE-19 cell lines according to the ISO 10993-5 recommendations, as described in the recently published paper of M. , MD, “Evaluation of cytotoxicity of perfluorocarbons for intraocular use by cytotoxicity test in vitro in cell lines and human donor retina ex vivo” in the journal Translational Vision Science & Technology (TVST).

The use of this test detects some interesting surprises.🤔

❗️The analysis showed that some of the tested PFCLs exceeded the maximum limit of 30% cell mortality; but not only. Consistent differences were found among the “not toxic” products, with some of them showing very low toxicity values and others being close or even too close to the acceptable limit of cell mortality.❗️
