Children's Happy Hospital Fund

Children's Happy Hospital Fund Children’s Happy Hospital Fund is a registered charity, supporting the Children and Young People’s Health Directorate at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

We also support the Community Nursing team, Children’s Theatres and other Paediatric areas within Derriford Hospital. Pink GirlMany children and young people need admission to hospital. For many it is only a short stay but for others, who have long term chronic illnesses, frequent hospital stays and also continuing care at home is required. Staff work hard to help and support children and young people, their families and carers through these difficult and sometimes traumatic times. However, there is always more that can be done and CHHF works to do ‘that little bit more’, such as purchase play and recreational items, improve the facilities for carers, buy additional medical equipment or support the provisions that cannot be financed from any other source. The Children’s Happy Hospital aims to make a difference for all young patients, for their families and carers both in hospital and at home. Extra support is provided in a variety of ways, including:

Improving the facilities available for parents and carers
Purchasing new toys, books and quality play equipment
Making a difference to the hospital environment by contributing to the costs of improving the surroundings, for example with art work, themed decoration and supplying additional furniture. Providing and maintaining high-tech medical equipment
Providing specialist staff training to supplement the high standards of medical care that the children receive. We are aiming to raise money to improve the facilities and services that we provide for children and young people within the Child Health Directorate. Child Health itself is broad and covers the following areas of service:

Our final post before the charity is fully closed.
We have been spending the money that we had over the last few months to help create fun and friendly environments along with providing resources to be used in cubicles.
The big items we have purchased with your help have been a sensory trolley, seating for CAU, seating for CYPOD and a relaxing seating area outside CHDU/CAU.
We are sad that we will no longer be here but would ask you to support Derrifords Children’s fund via the hospital charity who will continue our work.
Thank you all for your support over the years.

Play Service UHP
This is a bit late but we wanted to thank Cher's Funky Faces for donating her time to the children's wards over the Christmas period.
She bought lots of smiles to the children and staff.
Thank you

Finally some sad news. CHHF as an independent charity is going to cease to exist as from the end of this financial year in March 2024.
As a charity it has been our honour to support the Children's wards, the patients and their families and we want to take the time to thank you for all your support over the past 24 years.
There will be a new charity to continue the support of all the Children's areas within University Hospital Plymouth under the name of Derriford Children's Fund. More information about this will follow in the next few months.
Thank you again for all your support, it has benefitted so many of our patients in so many ways.
THANK YOU.

Continuing from our last post, we still have some funds left from the WRAP appeal which were going to go towards enhancing a new children's bathroom, however, this is not going to be happening for some time and we would like those of you who donated to WRAP appeal permission to use these funds to benefit the children now.
We would appreciate your feedback and would ask you to contact via chhf@nhs.net or plh-tr.playteam@nhs.net. We need your permission to change the use of these funds so would appreciate your thoughts.

Hi All
It has been some time since we posted so we wanted to update you with some of the things that we have been doing.
We have completed the update of the Parent Kitchen and the creation of the Parent Lounge with the help of Captain Tom Charity. These are both being used by the parents of our patient who really appreciate them.

Team Lenkiewicz donation to Children’s Wards
We have recently received a fantastic donation totalling £1886.25 which includes a donation from Becton and Dickinson UK of £500.
The Families Story
Instead of actually climbing Snowdon this August Bank Holiday as we would have liked to, we planned to run, walk and crawl the exact same total elevation - a whopping 1085m, up the Devon hills and trails around us. We wanted to raise money for Derriford's Children's Ward, where our family has spent plenty of time and where Osian and the brilliant staff there have got to know each other well, including after his hip and leg surgery last year.
We celebrated Osian's second birthday by raising as much money as we could for this place that has given us so much - and where so many children and families have had to spend a lot longer than we have. We wanted to help efforts to make it as bright and fun a place as possible, in particular at the moment when so many changes have had to happen because of Covid-19, including less visitors and doctors and nurses wearing masks, so not seeing their smiles, making it even more stressful for children and families. Spending time in the play area and sensory room, and being fascinated by the fish tank on the ward, have all made all of Osian's stays there easier. Having plenty of toys and play facilities available for longer term patients makes a huge difference to the experience of being in hospital which can be so tough.
We also know that this year has been a difficult one for fundraising so we wanted to do what we could for Derriford's Level 12, and also say a HUGE thank you for all the amazing care, kindness and attention Osian (and his mum and dad) have received there. Thank you for helping us celebrate Osian turning TWO by supporting this cause which is so important to us and cheering us on as we do our best to smash our next challenge (with a toddler in tow)!!!
Love Team Lenkiewicz ###
We thank Team Lenkiewicz and all their supporters for this generous donation.

Oscars Mums mission succeeded

In May-July this year Oscars mum took it upon herself to raise as much money as possible to be able to buy books for the Children’s Wards. She had been diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease in 2005 and spent a lot of time in paediatrics under the magnificent care of Dr Cade, Dr Turner and Nurses/Ward manager Helen, Jeanette and Petra.

Heather, Oscars mum, said “I know how important distraction is when children are in hospital, so when my own son became unwell between the ages of 4 and 12 months with numerous infections and severe febrile convulsions, I knew we were lucky to have a fantastic play room to use but Oscar was hooked up to drips a lot of the time and not able to visit the Playroom. We soon found out there was limited number of books for really young children which are likely to get damaged due to the children exploring the books fully and due to infection control they have to sadly get rid of them when damaged. To replace these they need ongoing fundraising as the books need to be brand new. Being an Usborne Organiser, I knew I could help. My aim was to raise £500 and The Herald did a fantastic write up which helped to go beyond what I originally hoped!”
She continued “There have been some incredibly generous people within the community who donated including Mayer’s Estate Agents. The final total was £725 and I always said I’d reinvest my commissions the final total was £940 worth of books. “

The Play Service wanted to say a big thank you to everyone that helped heather raise such a fantastic amount of money and to Heather for the wonderful selection of books. They are already a major hit with our patients.

Fantastic Donation of £1150 to the children’s wards and Ace school
One of our patients wanted to help provide some good glue sticks for the children to use on the ward after the one she had used hadn’t stuck very well. What started as a small plan grew into providing enough funds to purchase lots of resources and equipment for both the play team and Ace Hospital School.

Faye asked her family, friends and school to support her fundraising which as you can see by the fantastic £1150 donation, they were keen to help.

Between the School and the Play Team lots of Arts, Crafts, Activities and of course Glue Sticks have been purchased.

Thank you to Faye for thinking of others and all that supported her.
