Bell’s palsy can appear overnight — one side of the face suddenly stops moving.
The condition affects facial muscles when the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII) becomes inflamed or compressed, leading to loss of control over expressions, blinking, and smiling.
The exact cause remains uncertain, but viral infections are strongly suspected. The herpes simplex virus (responsible for cold sores) is most often linked, followed by herpes zoster, Epstein–Barr, and Lyme disease. In some cases, trauma or autoimmune reactions may contribute.
Symptoms develop rapidly — facial drooping, uneven smile, drooling, speech difficulty, altered taste, or sensitivity to sound. In most cases, the condition is temporary, and recovery occurs within weeks to months.
