📍 𝗦𝗼𝗳𝗶𝗮, 𝗕𝘂𝗹𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮 | 𝟮𝟱–𝟯𝟬 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲

From 25–30 May 2026, the global forensic science and forensic odontology community will gather in Sofia for the joint 24th IAFS - International Association of Forensic Sciences Conference and 17th BAFS Conference.

I’m pleased to share that our paper has been accepted, and I’m proud to present a joint study developed through collaboration between the University of Turin and the University of Dundee, together with my esteemed colleagues Scheila Mânica, Hemlata Pandey, and Giovanni Barbè (Italian Academy of Legal and Forensic Dentistry).

Our contribution, “The oral and perioral post-mortem profile: a practical guide to putrefactive and degenerative odontological phenomena,” aims to support a better understanding of the dental autopsy and its value in human identification.

For me, this event is more than a scientific meeting: it is an opportunity to contribute to international discussion, share professional experience from casework and research, and connect with colleagues and leading experts from around the world. It will also be a valuable occasion to strengthen the network of the Odontology Section of the Balkan Academy of Forensic Sciences, which I chair.

Finally, the conference will welcome many delegates from Association Forensic Odontology and Human Rights AFOHR, the non-profit organization now in its 11th year of activity, with over 100 members from more than 30 countries.

I’m also looking forward to engaging with everyone interested in the ethical use and responsible application of forensic science.

A public note (something personal).

Twenty-five years ago, when I found forensic odontology, I discovered more than a discipline. I discovered a purpose and a vision.

I have always considered myself a leader. But a leader without an idea worth pursuing risks becoming merely a boss, surrounded by the tears of those he commands. Forensic odontology gave me that idea, because it needed to earn a concrete role and a clear function within the justice system. In that need, I found my direction.

Over the years I have kept moving forward - without pause - because I never stopped believing in the 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 of forensic odontology.

This journey also made me a citizen of the world. Thanks to forensic odontology, I have visited over 50 countries and met extraordinary people, such as John Clement, David Sweet, Tore Solheim, Roberto Cameriere, Jim McGivney, Sigrid Kvaal, Irena Davidson, Jane Taylor, Bob Wood, Peter Vanezis, Fabrizio Montagna, Ron Taylor, Sakher Alqahtani and many other colleagues with whom I still collaborate.

Along the way, I’ve met everything: outstanding experts, people who claim expertise without the training and responsibility this field requires, colleagues frustrated by unrealized ambitions, enthusiastic students, and students who felt disillusioned. All of it strengthened my belief that this discipline must be built on 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲.

Forensic odontology also reconnected me with my passion for the law and the protection of vulnerable people: standing against 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐞, and never forgetting the 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐝 - those who still deserve a name, a story, and dignity.

That is why 2026, after 25 years of programs, initiatives, publications, teaching, research, study, and volunteer work - also in forensic odontology - will be a milestone for me: 𝐈𝐧 𝐒𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, 𝐈 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐦𝐲 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐝𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲.

A book that many have been waiting for.

Dr. Assi Sharon, head of the Israel Police Dental Identification Unit, declared “I looked at the photo and my hands shook. I knew immediately it was him."

This is a strong reminder that will always remain central to human identification. Teeth and dental work are uniquely individual and persist when other methods fail. Technology and AI may speed comparisons, but they can’t replace odontological expertise and validated dental .

The method relies on a unique dental structure, past imaging, and existing dental records. It enables an initial determination within a short time, even under harsh conditions.

International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust
Today we remember the victims of the Holocaust—and renew our commitment to human dignity, peace, tolerance, and justice.

This day also brings me back to May 24–26, 2007, when I was a 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿 at the IDEALS Congress at the University of Toronto’s St. Michael’s College. My talk addressed the ethical responsibilities of dental military officers, including the disturbing involvement of N**i dentists in extermination camps. The link to today is clear: when ethics is replaced by ideology and obedience, even health professionals can become part of dehumanization. Remembering is not only about the past—it is a responsibility for the present.

La 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗮 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮 non può essere intesa come risultato oggettivo autosufficiente, ma come esito di un 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗼 che richiede un 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗼 delle 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗲, delle 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘇𝗲 adottate e delle 𝗶𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀𝗶 𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 scartate.

Il 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗲 impone al 𝗴𝗶𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗲 non un’adesione deferente al 𝘀𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼, ma una verifica critica della sua 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮̀ 𝗲𝗽𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮, pena la trasformazione della scienza in una scorciatoia decisionale incompatibile con il principio del 𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝘂𝗯𝗯𝗶𝗼.

Come messo in luce dalla 𝗴𝗶𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗿𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘇𝗮 più recente e dalla 𝗱𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮 che ne ha analizzato gli sviluppi metodologici, il rischio maggiore della 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗮 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮 non risiede nell’errore tecnico in sé, ma nella rinuncia del giudice al 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗼, sostituito da una valutazione meramente autoritativa dell’esperto. In questo senso, il 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗼 𝗩𝗶𝗮 𝗣𝗼𝗺𝗮 rappresenta un esempio paradigmatico dei pericoli di una 𝗴𝗶𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗱𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘇𝗮, che il diritto delle prove scientifiche è chiamato oggi a scongiurare.

Chi è un medico-odontoiatra forense? È un medico che possiede competenze odontoiatriche, odontologiche, medico-legali, antropologiche, giuridiche e militari acquisite attraverso percorsi formativi (corsi di perfezionamento, master, lauree) ed esperienze in tribunali (attività peritali, magistratura onoraria), missioni militari e di protezione civile (in ambito NATO, Interpol, DVI), e attività umanitaria (tutela del diritto alla salute del paziente e protezione dei diritti umani).
Un odontoiatra forense dovrebbe possedere tutte queste competenze oppure scegliere un solo ambito di interesse. Ad esempio ci si potrebbe fermare alle valutazioni assicurative, oppure solo forensi.

Una hard skill in più per l’odontoiatra forense: 𝗱𝗼𝘃𝗿𝗲𝗯𝗯𝗲 𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶 anche la competenza militare in ambiente 𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗢.

Nel profilo dell’odontoiatra forense 𝗱𝗼𝘃𝗿𝗲𝗯𝗯𝗲 𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶 𝘂𝗻𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘇𝗮 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗶𝘂̀, spesso sottovalutata ma sempre più rilevante: la capacità di operare in contesto militare, secondo 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱 e 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗢.

Le attività che un 𝗨𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗢𝗱𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗮 può apportare alle 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘇𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 sono numerose e, per certi versi, cruciali: non si tratta solo di clinica, ma di contributi concreti alla prontezza operativa, alla gestione dei dati identificativi e alla cooperazione internazionale.

Già nel 𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟯, 𝗶𝗼, durante il Congresso Mondiale della 𝗦𝗲𝘇𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗲 della 𝗙𝗗𝗜 a Sydney, evidenziai una necessità chiave: disporre di una 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗲 nell’ambito dei 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶 𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶, per rendere i dati realmente confrontabili tra Paesi e Forze Armate diverse.

Per esperienza personale, maturata in 𝟯 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶 all’estero, posso confermare quanto siano determinanti:
- l’𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮̀ 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝘇𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗲 del soldato impiegato in teatro operativo
- l’𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮̀ con altri eserciti
- la 𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗹𝘁𝗮, 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝘇𝘇𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲 e 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲 dei 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶 𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶, anche tramite 𝗼𝗱𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗮 e 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗣𝗢𝗟

In quest’ottica, non è casuale il mio percorso: sono 𝗨𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗢𝗱𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗮 della 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘇𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗮 dell’𝗘𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗼 𝗜𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗼 e 𝗨𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼 del 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗲 della 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗮 𝗜𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗮.

Integrare la dimensione militare 𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗢 nelle competenze dell’odontoiatria forense 𝗱𝗼𝘃𝗿𝗲𝗯𝗯𝗲 diventare un 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗶𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗼 strutturale, soprattutto quando il contesto richiede collaborazione internazionale e procedure condivise.

Essere odontoiatra, per me, significa tenere insieme odontoiatria clinica (protesi, chirurgia orale, implantologia, ortodonzia, parodontologia), odontoiatria di comunità (pediatrica e disabilità) e ambito forense (medicina legale, odontologia forense, bioetica).

Ambiti diversi, un unico filo: responsabilità, servizio e giustizia.

My heartfelt thanks go to odontologists Scheila Manica and Hemlata Pandey, whose scientific expertise and rigorous approach greatly enriched the forensic and methodological aspects of this work, and to Juvenile judge Maurizio Cardanobile, whose legal insight and deep commitment to the protection of minors brought essential clarity to the human rights and judicial dimensions of age assessment.
