continues on Wednesday 28 January (7 pm) at the Cinema Rossini with BITTER RICE, Giuseppe De Santis' celebrated masterpiece. Silvana Mangano, Raf Vallone and Vittorio Gassman star as the protagonists in this "epic" that blends grandeur and neorealism, capturing in a single film the richness of the great director's work, combining "social commitment, a reinterpretation of genre conventions and American-style models of entertainment".

"De Santis had always had a reputation as an erotic and populist auteur, but in RISO AMARO, he sublimates it. His farmhouse is the place of conflict, the total space of social existence: hard work, dancing, desire, exploitation, illegality. The film is the swan song of popular culture, itself steeped in the corrupt and corrupting American myths. The positive theme of labour is subordinated to the laws of the noir and mélo; the honest hero Raf Vallone is outclassed by Mangano's sultriness and the perverse sensuality of the handsome Vittorio Gassman." prosegue mercoledì 28 gennaio (ore 19) al Cinema Rossini con RISO AMARO, celebre capolavoro di Giuseppe De Santis. Silvana Mangano, Raf Vallone e Vittorio Gassman danno vita ai protagonisti di questo "kolossal" che fonde epica e neorealismo, condensando in un'unica opera il cinema del grande regista, tra "impegno sociale, rivisitazione di convenzioni di genere e modelli spettacolari 'all'americana'".

"La fama di autore erotico e populista, De Santis l'aveva sempre avuta, RISO AMARO la sublima. La sua cascina è il luogo dei conflitti, lo spazio totale dell'esistenza sociale: fatica, balli, desiderio, sfruttamento, illegalità. Il film è il canto finale della cultura popolare, esso stesso già percorso dai corrotti e corruttori miti americani. Il tema positivo del lavoro è subalterno alle leggi del noir e del mélo; l'eroe onesto Raf Vallone è surclassato dalla sensualità della Mangano e da quella perversa del bel Gassman." (Gianni Volpi)

Torna, per il quarto anno, "Biennale Cinema per le Scuole", un ciclo di proiezioni matinée (ore 10) a Venezia (Cinema Giorgione) e (Cinema DANTE): in programma, tra febbraio e marzo, quattro film proposti dalla per le scuole secondarie del territorio.

Si comincia, il 24 febbraio al Cinema Giorgione e il 26 febbraio al Cinema Dante, con LE ASSAGGIATRICI di Silvio Soldini, l'intensa e commovente storia di coraggio e resistenza di un gruppo di giovani donne costrette, durante la Seconda guerra mondiale, ad assaggiare i pasti destinati al Führer, sospese ogni giorno tra fame, paura e il profondo desiderio di sentirsi vive – nonostante tutto.

In cartellone anche THE VOICE OF HIND RAJAB di Kaouther Ben Hania, già vincitore del Leone d'Argento – Gran Premio della Giuria alla , ZVANÌ – IL ROMANZO FAMIGLIARE di Giuseppe Piccioni e THE ELEPHANT MAN di David Lynch.

Ciclo di proiezioni matinée gratuite (dal 24 febbraio al 26 marzo, ore 10) per le Scuole secondarie del territorio.

Would you like to be among the protagonists of the ? There's time until 19 February to apply for the new call of the , the programme of residency, research, creation and production that this year will select up to 5 proposals by composers, sound artists and performers under 30 in alignment with the theme of the next Festival: music as "the childhood of the spirit: an experience that reconnects us to a primeval state of innocence, vitality, and creative power".

The eligible musical project categories are:
• live performance (with optional audiovisual component);
• acousmatic composition with multi-channel diffusion;
• audiovisual installation.

Supervised by Caterina Barbieri and mentors of excellence such as Thierry Coduys, Lyra Pramuk, Miller Puckette, and Marcel Weber, the selected young musicians will participate in a residency programme in Venice. The goal? The stage of the 70th International Festival of Contemporary Music (10 > 24 October 2026)!

First Lions of the year for the !
For her unique experimentation with language and for boldly tackling vexatious and painful themes tied to her homeland – Sicily –, Emma Dante, one of the most celebrated Italian directors of theatre and opera, is the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement of the 54th International Theatre Festival (Venice, 7 > 21 June 2026).
As Artistic Director Willem Dafoe writes in his motivation: "With irony, empathy and affection, Emma Dante has evoked on stage a theatre built on extraordinary simplicity and humanity, which turns its gaze on the meek, the forgotten, the outcasts, on the human and urban marginalities that she has portrayed like few other artists".

The Silver Lion goes to Mario Banushi, a Greek Albanian director whose "theatre, so immediately intimate and deeply rooted in the Balkan culture, also knows how to be intelligently political, a sharp stab at the contradictions of our time".

Salutiamo con affetto Valentino Garavani (1932-2026), stilista leggendario e maestro di un'eleganza senza tempo, il cui stile ha attraversato il mondo della moda e del cinema, lasciando un segno indelebile nell'immaginario di generazioni. Lo ricordiamo con questo scatto dalla , quando la sua visione approdò al Lido con VALENTINO: THE LAST EMPEROR di Matt Tyrnauer, presentato nella sezione Orizzonti Eventi.

Nel 2008 la Biennale Cinema aveva presentato il documentario biografico Valentino: The Last Emperor. Nel 2011 aveva sfilato sul Red Carpet per W.E. di Madonna.

New year, new beginnings with the restored masterpieces of : the 7th Permanent Festival of Restored Films returns to the Cinema Rossini until 29 April 2026 🎞
The series begins on Wednesday 21 January (7 pm) with THIEF, Michael Mann's neo-noir film featuring the unforgettable James Caan as the solitary thief Frank.

"In his first feature film for the big screen (after the made-for-television 'The Jericho Mile'), Michael Mann demonstrates such a thorough understanding of the genre (and of classic cinema) as to transform and reshape it through its deepest mechanisms. The melancholy of the thief in the title of the film is a mix of disillusionment and existentialism destined romantically to make happiness impossible. In James Caan he found an actor who expressed himself through a completely original use of the body and gesture." (Roy Menarini)

Si comincia mercoledì 21 gennaio, ore 19, con STRADE VIOLENTE, film neo-noir di Michael Mann con l'indimenticabile James Caan nei panni del ladro solitario Frank.

"Michael Mann, al suo primo lungometraggio per il grande schermo (dopo il televisivo 'La corsa di Jericho'), mostra di conoscere così profondamente il genere (e la classicità) da poterlo trasformare e riplasmare attraverso i suoi meccanismi più profondi. La malinconia del ladro che dà il titolo originale al film è un mix di disillusione ed esistenzialismo votato romanticamente all'impossibilità di essere felici, e trova in James Caan un attore capace di esprimersi con un uso del corpo e della mimica del tutto inediti." Are you a dancer or a choreographer? Would you like to test yourself on the stage of the ? Then the might help you realise your dream!

Under the mentorship of Wayne McGregor, the 2026 programme will select 16 dancers and 2 choreographers for an intensive three-month residency led by world-class teachers, where you will be able to develop your personal artistic skills.

Between classes and workshops, the experiences will conclude within the 20th International Festival of Contemporary Dance (Venice, 17 July > 1 August 2026), where the young artists will stage two new creations by Molissa Fenley and Maxine Doyle, participate in a performance workshop for research and development led by McGregor, and develop the original creations conceived by the selected choreographers. The programme will also allow participants to attend all the activities in the Festival.

Selections are open until Monday 26 January.
