Joining the Herbology Diploma at in 2023 was such a gift! I’m a lifelong learner, and with a fascination for plants and trees, mosses and lichens, fungi etc, since childhood, I needed myself in the course, not knowing that this immersion would set me off on a new trajectory in life.

I became a smallholder as a direct outcome of creating a Physic Garden as part of the Diploma.

I am also an Ambassador for the I feel humbled to represent such an erstwhile organisation that supports the growth and resurgence of interest in herbalism.

Hoping that I get a chance to visit to view this important new exhibition

🌿 Our new Herbology exhibition opens this week! Discover the healing power of plants and explore historic recipes and traditional remedy-making methods.

From our origins as a physic garden in 1670, to celebrating 20 years of our contemporary herbology course, we have a long history rooted in the study and use of medicinal herbs.

📅 Friday 13 Feb – Sunday 28 June at the John Hope Gateway Gallery. Free entry.

I spent the morning yesterday pruning cider apple trees in the orchard of The Elms, the hq here in Jersey.

Hanging out in the trees brought back a flood of memories of my childhood and late teens/early 20s when I spent many hours in apple trees on family and friends’ land in Devon and Surrey, picking apples…for sale in local markets; making juice, storing for winter, making pies and apple sauce.

The act of pruning was meditative, stepping back to view the tree, cutting away to create space and light for the tree to thrive was satisfying.

A lovely morning, thanks to the Rangers for their guidance. I shall be returning to gather some lichen for natural dye experiments, so much on the pruned branches.

The walled garden is looking so lovely, some excellent work by volunteers. Love the pond.

An amazing rainbow on the way home…reciprocity.

Life has taken a twist in the last year, moving to the countryside, becoming a tenant of an agricultural field, making plans to grow medicinal herbs and wildflowers along with collaborations growing ancient grains.

I spent the last couple of days building a starter to make 2 tin loaves with einkorn flour. I’d never baked with it before, or eaten any in baked goods either.

This ancient grain is one of the oldest cultivated, preserving its cultivation helps to maintain biodiversity and protect our agricultural heritage.

It has a higher protein, mineral, and vitamin content compared to modern wheat varieties.

I mixed the dough yesterday and left to prove overnight. The aroma of the honey-coloured loaves this morning was so gorgeous. I wrapped one up to gift to my mother, 89 today, and in need of extra nutrients and good healthy food to recover from a very nasty and prolonged illness.

I’ve always loved baking and this practice is already shifting things for me, adjusting plans to wholeheartedly embrace Baking As Lifestyle Medicine - the BALM Protocol developed by

I’ve already had requests for baking workshops for adults and teens!

Enjoy an immersive and relaxing afternoon, where you’ll be introduced to the sensory arts of foraging and Forest Therapy.

You’ll experience the restorative and energising power of becoming one with nature, through tasting wild food, with an embodied connection to the land.

Relaxing, gentle ways of bodyful connectedness, becoming fully present with your environs. This involves tuning into the plant and animal world through your senses, the way our ancestors knew the land, exploring the new spring shoots that are emerging now.

First date, Sunday 15th February. 2pm, meeting at Greve de Lecq, at the bus stop in the National Trust for Jersey car park.
An infused wild herbal tea and some home-baked sourdough cake will be served to celebrate our time together. Finishing around 4.30pm.

This is a seasonal foraging exploration, with Forest Therapy invitations woven through the experience, inviting you to engage with nature to develop your own wild relationship with the land, and your own inner nature.

Bookings essential, via email: amanda@wildedgewalker.earth
£25 pp.

What a way to start the week! Feeling low, cold and unwell yesterday afternoon and evening, I still mixed up some sourdough, using a spelt starter as I’d been prepping in the morning, then left to prove overnight. Full moon 🌕

Last week I had made up the spelt starter, in error, when asked to make a white starter as a task to prep for making a tin loaf and ended up making two starters. Not wanting to waste this, I looked through ‘s ‘10 MINUTE SOURDOUGH’ cookbook and found a recipe for Apple Spelt Sourdough Bake with Cinnamon butter. I adapted the recipe to use up some organic pears from where I’d also bought the .tacheron spelt flour.

I nurtured myself with a Pine scented bath this morning, some elderberry syrup, and then popped the sourdough in the oven to bake.

Really happy to see the results - truly Baking As Lifestyle Medicine!
Cinnamon is great for dry, tickly coughs.

The BALM Protocol is the ground of the Diploma in Nutrition and Digestability of Bread that I am embarking on with as a recipient of a discretionary scholarship as a healthcare practitioner.

Wellbeing starts with you, nurturing and nourishing yourself in ways that support helping others.

Baking has always been a joy for me, learning as a child from my grandmothers, from stoking wood-fired range cookers to foraging for wild berries to make cakes and pies.

Gifting the second bake to my neighbours.

The return of the light…a short medicine walk this morning to mark Imbolc, and the full moon 🌕

I’ve been contemplating my path recently, and how best to support myself within that. So, having grown Motherwort, Mugwort and Wormwood in my Physic Garden over the last 2 years, I bound some that I had dried together to create a herb bundle or smoke wand.

I placed fallen branches covered with lichen in a circle to step into, marking the beginning and end of the medicine walk. Before stepping in, I wandered for a little while setting an intention.

Passing through this gateway I noticed a kind of mist, a haziness in my eyesight for a moment, which cleared as I walked on.

The sunlight shining through the trees was so beautiful, illuminating the deep green moss, I was struck how much I love moss! The stream was in full flow, almost resembling a small river after recent rains. My thoughts drifted to moorlands, bogs and moss-covered boulders, bubbling rivers and of ancient stunted and gnarly Oak trees.

Rare remnants of temperate rainforests that are so vital to the health of our land, and sea.

Heartland comes to mind.

Imbolc is upon us, and the new signs of life in the banks and hedgerows are testament to the returning light and longer days.

Wild food and medicine are springing up now - Pilewort or Lesser celandine, cleavers and nettles, Alexanders. If you’d like to learn more about them join me this Sunday in a sensory exploration of the woodlands in St. Lawrence. Foraging helps us to remember our true relationship with nature.

In the morning I’ll guide you to follow a personal exploratory journey, a Medicine walk, a meditative practice seeking guidance from nature. You may have a question that’s showing up in your dreams…bring it to nature.

Sunday is also a full moon, when Neptune moves into Aries, that dreamy planet shifts up a gear into fire energy.

Last year was the Year of the Snake, a time for shedding, now is a time to dream and start to move towards something new.

10am Sunday 1st February, a day of gathering, sharing dreams perhaps, of seeking support and guidance from the more than human world.

Meeting at the Millennium stone, on the Chemin des Moulins, st. Lawrence.
