Most people think tinnitus is a problem with the ears. It often isn’t.
It’s usually the brain reacting to reduced sound input.

When hearing changes gradually (and it almost always does), the brain doesn’t like the silence. So it compensates. It “fills in the gaps.”

That filling-in can sound like ringing, buzzing or hissing.

Here’s the interesting part:

Many people with persistent tinnitus also have subtle hearing loss — even if they haven’t noticed it.

They hear fine in quiet.
They just struggle more in background noise.
They feel more tired after conversations.

When hearing is properly supported, the brain often relaxes — and tinnitus becomes less intrusive.

It’s not random.
It’s not meaningless.
It’s a signal.

If you’ve been living with tinnitus, it may be worth checking what your hearing is actually doing.

Unsure how to get the best out of your hearing aids?
Follow these 3 tips:

✅ Regular hearing aid cleaning, your clinic will show you best practices.
✅ Regular ear hygiene especially if you suffer from wax. Your clinic should provide you with a hygiene plan.
✅ Annual reviews will spot any changes in your hearing and hearing aid performance. Your clinic should carry these out routinely.

What is an audiogram?

When your specialist describes your hearing loss, he or she will always refer to the severity of the loss and its “configuration”, which means the pitches or frequencies you are unable to hear.

These tones will be placed on a graph called an audiogram.

An audiogram shows which frequencies you are able to hear, and at what volume. The audiogram gives your hearing professional a good idea of how severe your hearing loss is, and helps your professional select the best treatment options for you.
