Only fools and horses style 🐴

Loved running the Durrell Dash this morning! 💨 First time doing the event and it was so well organised.

Not knowing the route, we set ourselves a goal of sub 60 mins and managed a respectable 57 mins!

Hammies ⚒

Just about every athlete and weekend warrior relies on strong hamstrings. They are a group of muscles in the back of the thigh that are responsible for extending (straightening) the hip and flexing (bending) your knee.

The 3 large muscles that make up the hamstring; Semitendiosus, Semimembranosus and Bicep femoris. These 3 guys can get tight! 😣

But you’re not alone, tight and inflexible hamstrings are common. It can cause stiffness and limit your mobility. That tension may also cause issues elsewhere in the body such as the lower back, glutes and in and around the knee.

Few reasons why your hamstrings might be tight;
▪️Posture
▪️Overcompensation of other muscles
▪️Sitting too much
▪️Overuse
▪️Previous injuries

Sports massage can help improve flexibility, relieve tension and alleviate delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) in your hamstring.

IT’S NOT JUST FOR ATHLETES 🗣

Pleasure having the gents from Jake and Blakes removals in recently 🏡

Many people think that sports massage is used only for elite athletes or at the very least a serious sporting amateur. Whilst it massively benefits both, despite the name, you don’t necessarily have to do any exercise to benefit from a sports massage.

However we use our bodies, our muscles will adapt to keep us functioning for as long as possible, but over time this places excessive strain on the body, causing aches and pains.

Think about these everyday movements;

▪️Sitting at a desk all day
▪️Picking children up
▪️Lifting and carrying
▪️On your feet for long periods

Pain and dysfunction can be caused by a variety of occupational, lifestyle, postural and emotional factors. Sports massage can help treat muscle imbalances and problems occurring from these everyday movements.

Quadratus Lumborum 🪄

Sounds like a spell out of Harry Potter but it’s actually a muscle that might be responsible for your lower back pain!

The Quadratus Lumborum (QL) is located in your lower back, on each side of your lumbar spine and plays a major role in stabilising and connecting the spine to the pelvis. It allows the lumbar spine to flex and extend, as well as elevating the hip.

Many of my clients are unaware of this muscle and it can be quite tender to massage. This is mainly because it plays a large role in helping you sit and stand and when you sit for too long, your QL can start to seize and stay in shortened position, creating pain and stiffness.

PRE EVENT MASSAGE 🧠

I had the pleasure of working with Grouville FC in their cup final this week but what is a pre event massage and how can it help?

A pre event massage is a short therapy undertaken before a sporting activity. Using varied techniques, focusing on preparing your body and mind for the event. A pre event massage can take place on the day and also up to 72 hours prior to the event.

Benefits include;

▪️Increased blood circulation to the muscles, reducing tension.

▪️Mental preparation for the event, reducing stress and anxiety.

▪️Decreased risk of injury.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED A SPORTS MASSAGE? ⏳

When should I come back? I get asked this a lot!

It’s important I understand your needs before answering this question. My response will be different for each person. Factors such as your goals, general health, exercise type and budget are all considerations when answering this. The treatment is tailored to you 🫵🏻

Generally speaking, for those of you who’s training frequency and intensity is high, you may benefit from more regular massage given the stress on your body. How about a session every 1-3 weeks?

Others who are returning from injury may also need more frequent massage to accelerate the healing process. How does every 2-4 weeks sound?

If maintenance massage is more your thing and you want to keep the body in good working order, as much as I’d love to see you weekly, it’s not always necessary. Once every 4-6 weeks is great.

Alongside 60 minute, I also offer 30 minute sessions which are easier on the wallet and means we can work on focus areas.
