July is Sarcoma Cancer Awareness Month. Promoting awareness and support for those impacted by sarcoma, a rare cancer that affects connective tissues.
Here are some short facts about sarcoma:
1. Sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that originates in connective tissue, such as bones, muscles, fat, and blood vessels.
2. There are over 50 subtypes of sarcoma, broadly classified into soft tissue sarcomas and bone sarcomas.
3. Sarcomas can occur anywhere in the body, but common sites include arms, legs, and torso.
4. Symptoms often include swelling, pain, or a lump in the affected area.
5. Treatment typically involves surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, depending on the subtype and stage.
6. Sarcoma accounts for about 1% of adult cancers and 15% of childhood cancers.
7. Genetic mutations, radiation exposure, and certain chemicals can increase the risk of developing sarcoma.
