World Lymphoedema Day 💙

Twenty years ago, I met my first lymphoedema patient. What began as one patient became a journey of caring for and supporting many others navigating life with lymphoedema.

Over the years I have witnessed the impact that early recognition, proper treatment, and patient education can make — not just in reducing swelling, but in restoring comfort, confidence, and quality of life.

Today I continue this work by doing what matters most: teaching patients how to care for and protect their lymphatic system.

Twenty years of care.
Twenty years of advocacy.
And the work continues.

It’s not just the legs.

Many people associate lymphoedema with swelling in the legs, but upper extremity secondary lymphoedema can occur after breast cancer treatment when lymph nodes are removed or radiated.

This was one of my early breast cancer clients.
She began noticing subtle changes:
• Heaviness in the arm
• Tightness
• Jewelry feeling tighter
• Swelling that didn’t go away

These early signs are often overlooked or dismissed.

But lymphoedema is not “just fluid.”

It is a chronic condition that requires proper assessment and treatment.

👉🏽 Swipe to see the result after treatment.

With Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) — including manual lymph drainage, compression therapy, exercise, and skin care — swelling can be reduced and managed.

One of the most important things we can do is measure before surgery and monitor changes early.

Baseline measurements matter.
Early intervention matters.
Education matters.
As we observe World Lymphoedema Week, let’s continue raising awareness so patients know what to look for and where to find help.

In 2008, I met this client after he had already gone through multiple channels without real help.

By the time he arrived, the tissue had already changed.

What makes this story even more powerful?
He didn’t find me through a system.
He was sent by another lymphoedema client I had helped.

One patient recognised the signs.
One patient shared what they learned.
One patient said, “You need to see someone who understands this.”

That is the power of education.
That is the power of community.
That is each one teach one.

Lymphoedema is not “just fluid.”
It is chronic. It is progressive.
But it is manageable when recognised early.

This , I am reminded that awareness doesn’t only happen in clinics.
It happens in conversations.
It happens when one person chooses to share their knowledge.
Education changes outcomes.
And sometimes, it starts with one voice.

My first client 20 years ago changed the course of my life.

Lower extremity swelling, started at age 11.
Undiagnosed for years.
Told it was “just fluid.”

It wasn’t.

It was primary lymphoedema, and it opened my eyes to how many people are silently living with swelling that is misunderstood, dismissed, or overlooked.

That first client became the beginning of a 20-year journey in lymphoedema care, advocacy, and education.

Primary lymphoedema:
• Can develop without cancer
• Can appear in childhood or adulthood
• Often progresses slowly if untreated

Swelling is not “just fluid.”
And early recognition changes outcomes.

In honour of World Lymphoedema Week, I stand committed, as I was on day one, to raising awareness, educating patients and professionals, and ensuring no one feels invisible in their journey.

If you or someone you love is living with unexplained swelling, please know: answers exist. Support exists. Hope exists.

Swelling after cancer treatment is not something to ignore.

Over the past 20 years in lymphoedema care, I’ve seen one pattern repeatedly:

Many patients were never told what to look for.

Here are 3 things I wish every cancer patient knew:

1️⃣ Get baseline measurements before surgery or radiation.
We can’t track changes if we don’t know your starting point.

2️⃣ Lymphoedema is not just arms or legs.
It can affect the chest, trunk, head & neck, even ge****ls — depending on which lymph nodes were removed.

3️⃣ It can develop years later.
I’ve seen cases 10–20 years after treatment.
Early recognition changes outcomes.

If you or someone you love has had cancer treatment and you notice swelling, even subtle changes, get evaluated.

Throwback to 10 years ago… and still so relevant today.

In this moment, I was honoured to work alongside my colleague Dr. Jacqueline King , owner of the Sports & Physical Therapy Clinic as we performed Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) followed by Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) techniques for a patient managing bilateral lymphoedema.

Twenty years into this work, one thing remains clear:
Lymphatic care is not just a skill — it is a collaborative art.

Some of my greatest growth has come from working shoulder-to-shoulder with fellow therapists, sharing knowledge, refining technique, and staying committed to better outcomes for our patients.

This is one of the reasons I remain so passionate about:
✨ mentoring emerging therapists
✨ creating learning spaces
✨ and openly sharing what experience has taught me

Because when we grow together…
our patients benefit the most.

Here’s to collaboration across clinics, countries, and generations of therapists. 💛

Elastic taping can be a powerful tool in Lymphoedema Management — helping to direct lymphatic flow, reduce swelling, and support comfort after surgery.

Here, taping was used to guide drainage from the underarm and side of the breast toward the inguinal and opposite axillary nodes for a client post-mastectomy.

Each strip is placed with intention, care, and understanding of the body’s pathways for healing. 💙
