Cervical Cancer Awareness | A mini story

This all started with an abnormal Pap smear that was ignored and never treated. Years later she has cervical cancer. I just removed her uterus and cervix. She’ll start chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Please do your paps smears regularly, get treatment if necessary because early detection and treatment of abnormal cells can prevent you from getting cervical cancer!

There’s something about delivering the first baby for the year that I get extra joy from.

I had the privilege of delivering a healthy bouncing baby girl. A very big thank you to the parents who trusted me to be a part of this truly beautiful journey.

It’s cervical health awareness month.

Cervical cancer develops in a woman's cervix (the entrance to the uterus from the va**na). Almost all cervical cancer cases (99%) are linked to infection with high risk human papillomavirus (HPV), an extremely common virus transmitted through sexual contact. Although most infections with HPV resolve spontaneously and cause no symptoms, persistent infection can cause cervical cancer in women.

Cervical cancer is the 2nd most common cancer in women in Jamaica and one of the leading causes of cancer related deaths.
January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. It is a perfect opportunity to raise awareness about cervical cancer and HPV vaccination. This year, we are focusing on ending cervical cancer within a few generations as the theme for Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.

When diagnosed cervical cancer is one of the most successfully treatable forms of cancer, as long as it is detected early and managed effectively. With a comprehensive approach to prevent, screen and treat, we can end cervical cancer as a public health problem within a few generations. – WHO

The holiday season is filled with family gatherings and festivities. You may have had a wondering season but for some reason you are noticing something “off” about your va**na.

One common ailment women face is yeast infections. What you should know is that a yeast infection is a very common infection many women will experience in their lifetime.

Here are a few things that can indicate whether you have a yeast infection:
Redness and swelling of the v***a
A va**nal rash
Irritation and itching in and around the va**na
A burning feeling made worse by urination or in*******se
Discharge that is thick and white with a cottage cheese appearance
Watery discharge

If you think you may be suffering with a yeast infection and you are looking for treatment and next steps, please feel free to contact my office for assessment and treatment.

Happy Monday

A gentle reminder to call your Gynae office and schedule your yearly appointment. Sometimes we tend to forget to do things, like getting our yearly check-ups but this is important, especially if you want to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Question: when do you usually do your yearly Gynae visit?

With the holiday season approaching, I wanted to share some tips for women who are currently expecting. As Mommies, we try to do the most but you have to remain mindful of your currently situation. Here are some tips for expecting Mommies during the season:

Take it slow: Errands, shopping, home décor and preparing for hosting during the season can take a toll on you. Be mindful and pace yourself. If you feel your energy levels running low, take a break from the holiday madness and reset.

Eat Mindfully: Who doesn’t love a Jamaican holiday spread during Christmas? Seeing that you are expecting, it is important to maintain a healthy, nutritious diet throughout pregnancy, even when celebrating the holidays.

Travel Safely: If you are planning on taking a trip for the holiday season, consult your gynecologist before traveling by flight while pregnant.

Get Moving: Regular physical activity during pregnancy can help counteract some of the discomforts of pregnancy, manage stress, and even reduce the risk of complications like preeclampsia.
Manage Stress: It’s important for your health and your baby’s health to manage stress and its effects.

Sleep: Sleeping can already be difficult during pregnancy, and stress from the holidays may make it even harder. Take advantage of afternoon naps and sleeping in late, which are already typical during the holidays, and get some shut-eye whenever possible.
Drink responsibly: Alcohol is not recommended in pregnancy.

Please be reminded that some Christmas beverages and desserts contain alcohol.
