The most common cancer AND the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men in Jamaica 😰
How can we prevent this? While there are no preventable ways at this time, what we can do is:
- Screening yearly and
- Risk reduction
Once a man is 50 years old and older 🧔🏽♂️👴🏽 [Start at 40yo in persons with a family history]
Screening involves:
1. Digital Re**al Examination (DRE) - examination technique that checks the prostate for any abnormalities
2. Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test - a blood test that measures the level of PSA in the blood
Risk Reduction includes:
- Eating healthy (low fat, low red meat, high fibre diet)
- Consume lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains
- Maintain a health weight
- Be physically active
- No smoking
- Get regular Check-Ups
Symptoms can include: chronic pain to hips, thighs or back, difficulty urinating, painful urination, bloody urine or troubles getting an er****on. If you have any of these, please get it checked out 🙏🏼
Don’t wait until you have symptoms. Make an appointment to see me in my office for screening or a regular check-up 😊
