Pap smears are done to detect precancerous cells of the cervix and prevent cervical cancer. They are recommended for all women 21 years and over or 3 years after having a first s3xual in*******se.
Pap smears are to be done every 1 to 2 years. HPV testing is recommended in women 30 years and older.

All women 40 years and over need to do a mammogram. Mammograms are to be done annually, at times accompanied by a breast ultrasound . Mammograms are safe and decrease the risk of d¥ing from breast cancer by 25 to 30%.
Jamaican women present with more advanced breast cancer as compared to women in the US as we are doing less screening here in Jamaica. Fears surrounding doing the mammogram such as a fear of the mammogram causing cancer, or fear of the mammogram being painful are some of the factors why women avoid doing the mammogram. Mammograms do not cause cancer and are associated with mild discomfort but not pain. It takes 10 mins to do a mammogram.

Any female can get pregnant at ANY time from when she sees her first period until when she sees her last period, before entering the period called menopause. Some women who are above 40 and not on contraceptives believe that their risk is quiet low and so they don't use precaution and a few will get pregnant. So its best to use some form of contraceptive eg a long term contraceptive such as the intrauterine device, the implant placed in the arm , a low dose oral contraceptive, tubal ligation, the morning after pill and condoms are recommended and vasectomy for the males.
Many women who struggled with fibroids, Endometriosis in their 20s and 30s get pregnant in their 40s as during that time the fibroids start to shrink and improve and Endometriosis start to improve.

Treating the whole patient

I try to be thorough and address all the signs and symptoms even those outside of Gynecology and Obstetrics. It's not uncommon that ladies have other issues such as stomach pain from an ulcer , headaches, back pains, depression. I will manage some of these additional issues and refer to the relevant specialist where indicated as I try to help the whole patient. As eg you can't just treat the fibroids but ignore the depression that the fibroid is causing.
