Scenes from the 20th Annual Caribbean Child Research Conference, where leading voices in child development and education shared powerful insights on shaping a better future for Caribbean children.

Among the contributors was Dr Rebecca Tortello -Education Specialist at UNICEF, Patrice Reid - Psychologist, University of Technology, and Dr Shauna Miller.

Events like this remind us that the work of protecting and empowering children is ongoing and collective. Through research, collaboration, and evidence-based action, we continue to build a region where every child can thrive.

On December 4, KADM Psych Associates and KAHLE met with hotel industry staff to support their emotional readiness as the tourism sector prepares to reopen after Hurricane Melissa.
Reopening is not just about repairing physical spaces. It’s also about helping people rebuild their sense of safety, confidence and emotional stability after a collective crisis.

Through guided discussions and practical tools, we focused on stress management, trauma awareness and strengthening team resilience.
A stronger tourism sector begins with a supported workforce.

Happy International Day of Persons with Disabilities🥳

Today invites us to rethink how we understand disability through an inclusive lense. Disability is not simply a medical condition. It is an interaction between an individual’s functioning and the environment they navigate. When systems are inaccessible or attitudes are dismissive, the psychological impact can be profound.

Research continues to show that stigma, social exclusion, and limited access to support can contribute to higher rates of stress, anxiety, and depression among persons with disabilities. These outcomes are not inevitable. They are shaped by the environments we create.

Psychology teaches us that human well-being depends on belonging, autonomy, safety, and validation. When these needs are repeatedly denied, the effects accumulate. When they are supported, people thrive.

Today is a reminder to challenge the biases we hold, to listen to lived experiences, and to promote practices that affirm dignity rather than pathologise difference. Disability inclusion is not only a social issue. It is a mental health issue, a human rights issue, and a community responsibility.

Empathy isn’t just a feeling. It’s wired into our brains. 🧠✨ Oxytocin helps us connect, especially in tough times. When we make eye contact, speak warmly, and show genuine care, we activate the biology of compassion. Let’s lean into connection, not isolation.

Empathy is more than simply being kind. It is the ability to recognize and understand what someone else is feeling and to respond with care rather than judgement. Research shows that empathy supports cooperation, forgiveness, helping behaviour, and healthier relationships (Schumann, 2014; Batson, 2011).

It also shapes how we treat strangers and marginalized groups by reducing bias and increasing fairness (Batson, 1997; Okonofua, 2016).

In everyday life, especially during periods of collective stress, empathy helps us stay connected, patient, and supportive. It strengthens communities and creates the conditions for emotional recovery.

At its core, empathy says: “Your experience matters, and I am willing to understand.”

Likkle but we tallawah. 🇯🇲
This hurricane shook us to the core. Many have lost their homes, their farms, their peace of mind. But we’re still here.
We will rebuild.
We will heal.
Because the Jamaican spirit doesn’t break. It bends, it prays, it rises again💚💛

Prayers for our western parishes🙏🏽

Educators across Barbados are being equipped with practical psychology tools to better support at-risk youth and reduce school-related violence.

Through a new regional initiative, teachers and counsellors are being trained in a group modality in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TOP-CBT) to help students manage emotions, strengthen self-control, and build resilience. Organized, promoted and supported by Multicare Youth Foundation and the Ministry of Educational Transformation (Barbados).

Among the professionals leading this effort is our very own Dr. Kai A.D. Morgan Campbell and Mr Kyle Schloss.

This collaboration marks another important step toward creating trauma-informed, emotionally healthy Caribbean schools🙌🏾
